Bluntemperor: Speaking of the Marina Light Rail Bridge, the red patches in the following diagram represent shipwrecks, discarded mooring dolphins, and various other underwater obstructions discovered during construction. The amount of piling works required on that phase is massive. |

Sagay212: Perfection should never be the enemy of better. The reality is that the Oshodi Interchange project is an existential improvement on what existed there - and I deliberately employ the term "existential" because it is not merely a physical improvement and regeneration (which in itself is massive) but a social and economic regeneration. The Interchange project not only helps to elevate the quality and standards of public infrastructure in Nigeria, but it completely re-envisions and restructures the very nature and practice of mass transportation in our corner of the world, while eliminating (or at least substantially minimizing) the criminal elements that ran roughshod over that area. In addition, the Bus Reform Initiative of which these terminals are part and parcel of should upgrade mass public transportation in Lagos, and facilitate business development and job creation. Meanwhile, it is patently unfair (if not dishonest) to impute that these terminals is all that Mr. Ambode has been doing in Lagos. Apart from the 450 inner roads built/rebuilt across all 57 LCDAs in the state, the Code Lagos program is presently training up to a million coders in Lagos in partnership with global companies like Microsoft, SAP and Oracle. The Ready-Set-Work program works with the biggest public companies and other private businesses to provide internships to Lagos undergraduates with a view towards potential future employment or preparation for the modern workplace or entrepreneurship training and mentorship. The Lagos Employment Trust Fund (LSTEF) offers grants and single-digit low interest loans to entrepreneurs resident in Lagos (regardless of the so-called State of Origin). Lagos presently provides FREE education for about 1.6 million students in public schools, and teachers are constantly be trained and retrained in Lagos (there's also a car loan program for principals, headmasters and some senior teachers), schools are constantly being renovated/upgraded while new model schools are being built in each of the state's 5 divisions. Mr. Ambode has deepened the Lagos State Security Trust Fund and even increased the police's active duty death benefits under the scheme from N1 million to N5 million (and frankly these things should be the responsibility of the federal government that controls the police force). He has set up one of the best equipped and capable emergency response units in Africa, and has computerised vehicle inspections, licensing, the land registry, etc. Furthermore, Lagos continues to upgrade its primary healthcare centers and general hospitals (where certain categories of patients receive substantially free treatment), and has instituted a state-run health insurance scheme. I realize that many Nigerians tend to have a "commissioning" mindset towards government and governance (to wit, if nothing is being "commissioned" nothing is being done), but the truth is that Mr. Ambode (and Mr. Fashola before him) has done a relatively excellent job of governing and upgrading what is probably Africa's most difficult and complex cities to govern. |
