kikake: This statement of your is an ignorant one. You need to google about his many atrocities, more of which would begin to come to the limelight now that he is no longer controlling the reins of power. Did you ever wonder why UN War Crime Tribunal wanted to arrest him? Even though Nigeria has many issues and incompetent leaders, most of the other African nations suffer even more human right violations! Educate yourself, please! |

Badonasty: complete falacy. have u heard of thomas shankara? he's the best president burkina faso has ever had. Jerry rawlings comes to mind. there was in egypt in the 60s, Gadaffi (hate him if u like) was the best thing that happened to libya. the list goes on and on. and whether u like it or not nigeria faired better developmentally under the military than this sham we call democracy today. there are countless number of military governors that no civilian governor in those states can match their achievements. sam ogbemidia, oyakilome, diete spiff, uche nwosu, marwa, etc |

BabaCommander: Oga, democracy is fought for not given. I don't know anywhere in the world where democracy is thriving today that the citizens have not fought to bed in the past and continue to water with their blood in the present. Given the liberties the people of Sudan, Cameroun and other long standing dictatorships accord their emperors there is no doubt Donald Trump, Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron would wish the best of both worlds, that is a docile, ignorant people in a deceloped, thriving envelope. Such are the desires of the average Nigerian when he sots daily to blame government for everything while himself does absolutely nothing to change the stagus quo. The truth is simple. A people cannot experience a better country than the sum of their collective intellects and wills to overcome their personal prejudices Here Africa fails remarkably. 1 Like |

The issue with Africa is not the lack of democratic governance rather it's the absence of nationalist leadership. Democracy remains "the longest route to development". There're but a handful of nations who owe their development to democracy, it takes a strong spirited dictator-like leadership to bring tangible development. The Roman empire sapped the rest of the world to set the way for Europe. The US owes it's development to the influx of Europeans to the Newfoundland and went on to build the nation on the graves of black slaves. China is a one party nation that has since it's new dawn had just 2 leaders. Lee K.Y governed Singapore for 24 years and stood unopposed in 11 elections. P. Kagema is pushing Rwanda to the new age despite being a "strong man". Japan was built by it's callous monarchy who invaded and annexed nations for fun. Just name them. In the past century we've seen nations develop either by being of strategic importance to the western powers e.g S. Korea, or by internally-inspired movement led by "strong men" and non "democratic" but nationalist leaders e.g China, UAE, Qatar, etc. Whether it be the men-in-uniform or those clad in Civil clothes, Africa's lack of patriotic leaders will forever be it's undoing. "Democracy is not a good thing for Africa. We were all happy to see democracy come to Africa, but it destroyed the human sensibility. To have a democracy, people have to understand democracy, and how can people understand when 85% of the people in the country cannot read or write? They need a benevolent dictator like China has; someone who loves his country and acts for his country.” ---Salif Keita. |

This dude came to power through a coup and held tight for decades without seeing the need to set up democratic structures. Why should he? It would have worked against him in the end. That which is illegal should stay illegal to remain useful. I don’t understand how it took thirty long years and a coup to get this man out of power. I am beginning to believe conspiracies of developed nations’ meddling in the affairs of poor African countries. It is only with external financial and military support a country’s army can overtake that which created it. It won’t surprise me if Boko Haram has strong international allies providing aid to its fighters. |
