Sometimes I wonder whether everything about Nigeria was purposely designed to fail. This's probably the only country in the world that doesn't have a democratic constitution designed by consensus.

Any country that want to fail should just emulate the Nigerian system.

Creating a whooping number of 19 states and Abuja in one northern region, but only 17 states in the two southern regions, by northern soldiers, makes northern region draw undue large number of political representation to the National Assembly, to shout down any southern legislator asking for political restructuring, or in this case, condemning the 1999 constitution supervised by northern Nigeria's military dictators.

Land mass or population statistics is not used as yardstick to determine where and how many new political units can be created in a region in a country formed by diverse regions.

The yardstick is equity at last between the forming regions. There should have been more states in the two southern regions than in the one northern region after the last states were created by Abacha.

This is why after 20 years a group of soldiers wearing AK47 rifles practically dictated what could be or not be in a constitution and imposed the constitution upon Nigeria, we still use the constitution.
This is not obtainable in any other modern country.

Courageous Senator Adeleye has stirred the country up to rise to do away with a 1999 constitution not subjected to any referendum, make another constitution for Nigeria by first restructuring the country's skewed political structure.

Desire for equity in a country formed by diverse regions is the criterion to use when creating new political units like state or province or local government areas.

The criterion is never land mass or population statistics.

Wrong . the 1999 constitution was not drafted by abacha but by abdusallam . abacha died in 1998 and never needed a constitution to force himself on us. He used decrees and vetos. Abdusallam made d constitution as part of his transition program to handover to a democratic govt.
