Qur'an 4:3: Contextual Meaning

Qur'an 4:3
And if you fear that not you will be able to do justice with the orphans, then marry what seem suitable to you from the women, 2, 3 or 4.

The kind of polygamy that Qur'an 4:3 cover pertain to orphans. The phrase, "And if you fear that you will not be able to do justice with orphans" precedes the instruction to marry in the same sentence of the verse 3, chapter 4. In short, "marry two, three or four" is directive that is conditioned by orphans.

This alone, proves this verse is not open invitation for men to take more second wife if they are interested or capable. But let's explore the context of the previous and later verses.

Verse 2; giving orphans their properties. Verse 3; the marriage, IF you fear you can't deal fairly with the orphans. Verse 4; dowry for the aforementioned marriage. Verse 5; the orphans' clothing and feeding. Verse 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 all speaks of orphans.

The connection between the orphan and the women to be married is significant, whether verse 3 understood alone or in association with the nearest verses. The condition for this marriage, is the care and protection of the orphans.

It thus can't be too far-fetched to take these women as widows, and the orphans to be the children of these widows.

And it is bad that the starting phrase of the verse; "If you fear you cannot deal justly with the orphans" have been overlooked, this condition for the marriage have been overlooked; to derive an half baked interpretation of the verse, and coerce or coax women into gratuitous polygamy.

Genuine Polygamy V Gratuitous Polygamy

There is a place for polygamy. If say a man's only wife is barren or if another wife is the mutual interest of the couple and not the interest of only the husband. This is genuine polygamy. This isn't the kind of polygamy Qur'an 4:3 address but we can agree it is unbias and fair.

But this polygamy is not the only type that corrupt and ignorant Muslims promote with 4:3. What they also promote is gratuitous polygamy; where any man can get another wife for even selfish reasons like sexual boredom, lust, infatuation, pride and fame, given sufficient means.
Re: Qur'an & Gratuitous Polygamy by Question01(m): 12:37pm On May 05, 2019
And this gratuitous polygamy is what some Muslim women bemoan, but they are immediately shut down with fragmented and decontextualized citation of Qur'an 4:3, and demanded to "fear Allah" if they still dare protest.

We now proceed to examine some of the oft-parroted justification for gratuitous polygamy in the Muslim community:
Re: Qur'an & Gratuitous Polygamy by Question01(m): 12:42pm On May 05, 2019
1. Polygamy offers legal alternative to extramarital affairs.
2. Men are polygamous in nature, one wife may not sexually satisfy a man.
3. Polygamy benefits bachelorette unable to find single men for marriage.

For now, you can read these parroted justifications echoed here; Islam & Polygamy. Hopefully, next week I'll address them in detail.

Mr.Olai:
Allah(SWT) says in Qur'an “marry those that please you of women, TWO or THREE or FOUR. But if you fear that you will not be just, then marry only ONE.... That is nearer to prevent you from doing injustice.” (Q. 4:3)

In Islam, it is permissible for a man to marry two, three or a maximum of four wives at a time. This is permissible with the conditions of being able to cater for the needs of the wives without being bias to any of them. On the other side, it is not permissible for a woman to marry more than one husband at a time.
Re: Qur'an & Gratuitous Polygamy by usermane(m): 3:14pm On May 12, 2019
By the underlined. I just want to first draw attention to how Mr.Olai typically skipped the first clause for this verse; "And if you fear you cannot deal justly with the orphans", and jumps right to "marry those that please you....".

Mr.Olai either copied and pasted the verse without even reading it, or intentionally cut out the first clause because he knew the very first clause he has omitted impart a different meaning from his preferred meaning.

Men Have More Sex Drive than Women

A typical BS excuse. Women can have as much sex drive as men. They just tend to repress it because the patriarchal nature of our society deter them from expressing it.

Allah(SWT) in His wisdom has designed women to be monogamous while men are designed otherwise. A man can have two or more women giving birth for him at the same time. This is not possible in case of women. Women have restricted fertile life from menarche to menopause. Before menarche and after menopause, a woman cannot give birth to a child, except with the miracle of Allah(SWT).

This is false information. Why will Allah create women monogamous and men polygamous? Why not create both men and women monogamous? Wouldn't that be less unfavorable to women?
Re: Qur'an & Gratuitous Polygamy by usermane(m): 3:16pm On May 12, 2019
Now, it is true that by menopause women tend to lose their drive for sex. But even men lose their drive with age. Imagine a 55 years old man, with a 48 years old wife, and now seeking a 28 years woman as second wife, because the first wife has reached menopause.

But this man at 55 won't have as much libido as in his 30s and his libido will plummet even further by 60. What becomes of this second wife then
Re: Qur'an & Gratuitous Polygamy by usermane(m): 3:16pm On May 12, 2019
Of course, Mr.Olai speaks not directly of libido but specifies child bearing. But we all know that child bearing is far from the only reason why Qur'an 4:3 is often distorted to push for polygamy. Yet, how many married men today seek a second wife in necessity for baby, as the first wife is past menopause?

Times have changed, there is no need for 10 or 16 children per household anymore. If a man seek a second wife and start seeking support from the Qur'an, there is very little chance that he needs a baby that his menopausal wife cannot deliver.

Polygamy offers marriage to single women unable to find bachelors

There is normally a surplus of women in most human societies. The surplus here might not necessarily be in terms of male female population ratio. The surplus is as a result of the factors such as: men dying in wars, violent crimes, women outliving men, accident at workplace, etc. Among the surplus women are widows, old and young ones.

All of these are man made conditions affecting gender demographics. There is no certain proof that women always outnumber men naturally. There are cases where men outnumber women. According to Global Media Insight, sex demographic in Saudi Arabia is 57%(men) to 43% women.
Re: Qur'an & Gratuitous Polygamy by usermane(m): 3:18pm On May 12, 2019
Now, as for widows left behind after loss of men, these are the focus of the verse that Mr.Olai just butchered. Not married men needlessly seeking another bachelorette. Surprisingly though, Mr.Olai is unable to connect the dot and see this verse specifically addresses marriage to widows, not bachelorette as most polygamist marry.
Re: Qur'an & Gratuitous Polygamy by usermane(m): 3:18pm On May 12, 2019
Allah(SWT) has designed the restricted polygamy to cater for the needs of the surplus women. If our systems do not cater for the needs of the surplus women, it will result into evils in society. For example, Germany after World War II, when suggestions to legalize polygamy were rejected by the Church, that resulted into the legalization of prostitution. German prostitutes are considered as workers like any other profession. They receive health benefits and pay taxes like any other citizen.

This example is weak. Women don't become prostitutes because they can't find husband. Prostitution is due to financial problems. Wake up, this is 2019, not 1945. We don't need one Alhaji marrying 2, 3 or 4 women while the bachelor down the street can't seem to find any woman.

Polygamy curbs extra-marital affairs

Institutional polygamy prevents the spread of diseases like Herpes and AIDS. Such venereal diseases spread in promiscuous societies where extra-marital affairs abound.

False. AIDS and Herpes spread even without sexual contact.
Re: Qur'an & Gratuitous Polygamy by usermane(m): 3:20pm On May 12, 2019
Polygamy protects the interests of women and children in society. Men, in Western society make the laws. They prefer to keep polygamy illegal because it absolves them of responsibility. Legalized polygamy would require them to spend on their additional wives and their offsprings. Monogamy allows them to enjoy extra-marital affairs without economic consequences.

Well, if you need legalized polygamy to deter men from adultery without consequences, then you sure need polyandry against women who may commit adultery without consequences. Unlike the 700s, we can run paternity test for children today, there is no real challenge facing polyandry anymore.
