MUMBAI: Nine accused, including two Nigerians, were arrested on Thursday by DN Nagar police in a cheating case, popularly known as the Nigerian scam. The accused had cheated many people after declaring that they had won lotteries.

The accused also withdrew money from banks using fake credit cards.

The Nigerians- Charles Ikona Oputta and Yomi Prince-had appointed several agents who would contact the victims with the offer and once they were convinced, the Nigerians would go and meet them for the final deal. The accused would ask the victims to deposit advance money with them for the legal formalities. After receiving the money, the accused would sever all contacts with the victims.

The officials added that once a target had been identified, the Nigerian gang would send them an email or SMS stating that they had won a lottery worth over millions of dollars.

The accused would collect credit card details of restaurant customers with the help of waiters. The waiters would copy the card data on a magnetic device hidden inside their pocket before swiping the card at the cash counter and give it to the Nigerians who would copy the data on another card and use it for withdrawal.
