Between Awolowo and Ojukwu:

The greatest irony of all is that, generally speaking, the Igbo detest Awolowo so much and have done everything that is physically possible to malign and discredit him since 1967.

Yet this was the man whose party went into an alliance with them at the most critical point in our history (between 1964 and 1966) and who wanted the Yoruba to work closely with them.

The Igbos do not teach their children all the good works of Awolowo to the Igbo tribe and instead they tell them that Awolowo was the devil incarnate, a murderer of children, a genocidal maniac and an Igbo hater who ended up committing suicide out of frustration.

These were all lies and well orchestrated fabrications that were designed to rubbish the man's memory and legacy.

On the night of Jan 15th 1966, during the course of the Ifejuna-led Igbo coup, amongst many others, they murdered Chief S.L. Akintola and Sir Ahmadu Bello (the Premiers of the Western and Northern Regions respectively) who were both their political adversaries, who saw through them at an early stage and who had open contempt for them.

Now do the math, Major Patrick Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu was the face of a coup in Jan 15, 1966 where no single politician from East was killed but Sir Ahmadu Bello and Chief Akintola were killed in the North and West respectively along with other politicians.

Then Awolowo was already in Calabar prison since September 1963 on a charge of sedition.

On July 29, 1966, there was counter coup by Northern officers who saw the first coup as sectional where Aguiyi Ironsi (the beneficiary of the first coup) was killed along with Adekunle Fajuyi (who died because of his loyalty to Aguyi) in Ibadan.

General Gowon became president on August 1st, 1966.

On the third day, Gowon release Awolowo from prison.

Immediately after Nzeogu coup, Ojukwu was made Governor of Eastern region on January 17,1966 and he never talk about Awolowo talk less of releasing him.

The Biafran war started on July 6, 1967 and ended on January 15, 1970.

How then did the great Awolowo betrayed Ojukwu?
