Many parts of Lagos are currently experiencing a blackout. Here's why.

EKEDC apologises to customers over shortage of electricity supply

By Raji Rasak Lagos,
April 26, 2019 (NAN)

The Management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Friday apologised to its customers over poor power supply being experienced recently.

Mr Godwin Idemudia, the General Manager, Corporate Communications Department of EKEDC in a statement in Lagos said it was due to shortage of electricity supply from National Grid (NG).

According to Idemudia, the shortage in power supply was due to a cut on the Egbin – Benin 330KV line that has temporarily shut down Egbin power plant and curtailed supply into Lagos where EKEDC operates.

The General Manager said that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) was working round the clock to rectify the situation and power supply would be restored back to normal as soon as possible.

He thanked customers for their understanding and promised that efforts were being made to ensure improvement in power supply adding that customers will be informed about updates on the situation.

What I've gathered (from discussions I've had with friends) is that there's an almost total blackout within the city (in places like Lekki, Ikoyi, Apapa, Ikeja, Yaba, Surulere, etc.), but places on the outskirts of the city (eg Sangotedo) have almost constant power.

The blackout no be here. My main worry now is in this statememt, "The General Manager said that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) was working round the clock to rectify the situation and power supply would be restored back to normal as soon as possible".

Which Normal are they talking about? Power has been bad in Lagos, and only got worst recently. What a failed country.

This has always been the problem.

The grid has to be decentralised. Of course since it's a centralised grid the trip of that major line means that the capacity of the grid is seriously reduced hence the need to shut down Egbin (imagine). If the grid were decentralised and generating stations didn't have to pay homage to Osogbo it would have been easy to create islands and redistribute power.

This isn't rocket science but for Nigeria where we have round pegs in square holes it is undoable.

And these are the clowns talking of feeding renewables into the grid. If you are lacking capacity for conveying power now, what happens when you feed in intermittent power and Egbin drops out or any other n-1 or n-2 fault occurs?

This is the fault and responsibility of the federal government since TCN is owned solely by Nigeria still.

Most blackout issues that last for days are usually from the TCN but since the masses only know and interact with the Discos, they will always blame the discos. Here in Warri, some parts of warri environs have been having issues with light, my investigation led me to know that the problem was actually a Transmission fault and not Distribution.
But the Discos too get their own wahala jare grin
