Anambra procures land to build children’s prison

The Anambra State Government has procured a piece of land in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of the state for the construction of children’s prison.

The institution, it was gathered, would serve as a correctional home for persons in conflict with the law.

This is coming barely a week after the National Human Rights Commission raised the alarm that no fewer than 523 children were languishing in various (adult) prisons in the state.

Speaking during an inspection tour and handover of the property to the state government by the Umunze community, the Commissioner for Children and Women’s Affairs, Ndidi Mezue, expressed gratitude to the community for providing the land.

She also thanked Josephine Onah of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption of the European Union for initiating the process of securing the site.

Assuring government’s partnership with RoLAC in developing the project, Mezue assured that her ministry would soon clear the site to begin perimeter fencing of the facility.

She said she would involve other ministries that would have roles to play in the development of the physical structure at the centre as well as set up a committee that would plan the development of the facility and forward reports to Governor Willie Obiano for implementation.

According to Mezue, the correctional facility would provide a proper place for rehabilitating minors who were often picked up on the streets or found guilty of a crime by courts in the state.

“Before now, we have been having issues with where to keep young ones, who had been found guilty of crimes or picked on the streets.

We used to put them in our orphanage at Awka, but it is not enough. So, we really appreciate the people of Umunze for donating this place and we will make the best of it,” Mezue said.

The State Programme Coordinator of RoLAC, Josephine Onah, said the initiative was part of the European Union’s programmes for rights of children, women and the disabled.

She said it was during an interactive session with Presidents-General of the communities in Anambra State that she sensitised them on the need to provide land for building a correctional centre to take care of cases of those in conflict with the law (children offenders below 18 years of age).

Onah added, “We brought our consultant who, after studying the land, came up with a recommendation that the place was suitable for the centre.”

Yes a juvenile detention center. Or would you prefer minors and adults being held in the same facilities. This a common thing done in the US, Europe, and etc.

These are delinquent children, criminals....worse than almajiri children. Almajiri go out to beg, your children in Anambra, according to this article, go out to commit crime and terrorize society. They must be locked up in a prison away from hurting people or vandalizing properties in society.

Okay, so is South Korea then because they have them too. The US as well. Canada in fact is a hell hole because they also think minors should be rehabilitated in their own special facilities.

Most countries frown on children being forced to beg, but okay. You are the guy who lives in the country that is unable to provide the basic necessities for living...and I don't. I guess that's why you have time for such stup1d thoughts.

These are just 3 countries with a youth detention system. There are plenty of other countries that detain children who commit petty crimes, are truants, or in severe cases housed until they age into the Adult system due to the level of crime.

Because they do. Every country sets it based on their standards, but plenty of countries do it because they understand that sometimes kids need to be detained for a wide variety of reasons. With the goal being that they are rehabilitated and quickly released back into the community.

Nigeria is the same country where a bunch of girls are kidnapped and sold into slavery, made child brides, and God knows what else Boko Harem has done to them. It's also the same place that educates children in conditions not fit for even barnyard animals. It's the same place where children are spanked and humiliated because of their parents' inability to pay school fees. It's the same place where public universities are underfunded and substandard. Which puts them at a severe disadvantage in a the 21st century. There's also cultism and runs girls. And on and on...

if Nigeria was nirvana there wouldn't be so many threads about obtaining Visas from the USA to Botswana. Because that's how desperate your countrymen are to flee the country. Nigerians wouldn't be flooding every school in the US for degrees.

Your malls are foreign, your telecom services are foreign, the oil pumped from the ground and sold back to you are from mostly foreign companies, or is Shell and BP Nigerian? Trains from the Chinese, malls from the South Africans, cars from the Japanese...my friend stop being clever by a fourth (you are way too dull to be clever by half lol)

It makes sense that they would source outside expertise because that's what you do when you are not familiar with something. And why would you drug children? I dont know how laws work in Nigeria, but you dont get to just drug people talk less of kids as you like. Unless the child has a mental disorder that requires medical treatment, you are not just giving them drugs to calm them down.

When they gt on teenage years they are uncontrollable because they grew up underatanding they must have their way and have no underatanding of restraint. The relationship with their parents become disrespectful and at that point it escalates to beyond their homes and into public. They grow a mob mentality and become fraternal with peer pressure and daring risks. They start small with vandalism,then into assault. No parental control, government take over and act as surrogate parent by putting them in time out....but the timeout is spent in prison where they drug them to keep their volatile behavior in check. The drug has negative effects because it distorts their metabolism, endrogene and pituitary glands. .....turns them into monsters.

Have you lost parental control over your children in SE? Is that why you see this prison as a cop out? You need a surrogate parent to take these children off your hands....a prison,.... or perharps ship them to North and West to go sleep under bridge and become nuisance to Yoruba and Hausa?

Nigeria with it's "perfect" children is doing what exactly? Engaged in cultism, kidnapping, rituals, murder, robbery, terrorism, and every other vice. So what are you going on about? If Nigeria was doing things the right way it wouldn't be at the bottom of every index.

Was it not a young man from the SW tried to bomb an airplane bound to the US. Which is why I now have to go through a full body scan to get on a plane. Was it not to young men with ancestry from the SW that murdered a UK soldier in cold blood on a London street? Credit card theft and money scams are huge in the SW.

Is it not the North that made Nigeria a hotbed for terrorism in West Africa and Africa as a whole? Some of lowest rates of school attendance in Africa. Endemic childhood poverty.

Im talking to you about your deficiency and why its wrong to underage children in priaon and you are giving sermons about what others do. Face the topic and worry less about linking US, Europe, SW & others

You have acquired land in Anambra to build prison for underage children so the little boys and girls can be separated from their current incarceration with adults in priaon. This is wrong, it is a deficient policy
