Today we will be talking about cholesterol

A lot of people do hear the word Cholesterol,
It might be in the hospital or while reading an article on health or while watching an health educative programme on the t.v

Mostly, you will hear people saying Cholesterol is not good for the body that it can cause high blood pressure which can Lead to death.

This is true but do you know that its a must you have cholesterol in your body, because if you don't have cholesterol in your body one of your organs is damaged, and that is the liver.

CHOLESTEROL IS BOTH GOOD AND BAD.
What do I mean by "both good and bad"?

At normal level, it is an essential substance for the body but if it's concentrations in the blood get too high, it becomes a silent danger and can lead to high blood pressure and heart attack.

WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL?

Cholesterol is an oil-based substance, a sterol lipid synthesized by the liver and transported in the bloodstream to the membranes of all cells.

Cholesterol plays a central role in many biochemical processes and, as a lipoprotein that coats the walls of the blood vessels ( arteries and veins and capillaries).

Cholesterol is found in every cell of the body and has a lot of important natural functions when it comes to digestion, producing hormones, and generating vitamin D (also known as calciferol) which helps in the building and formation of Strong bones and muscles.

Cholesterol is manufactured by the body (synthesized by the liver) but can also be taken in from food (especially foods that are rich in fats).

SO WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHOLESTEROL IN OUR BODY SYSTEM?

Cholesterol has four main functions in the body without which we would not be alive.

These are:
• Contributing to the structure of cell
• production of vitamin D (calciferol)
• Coating the wall of the blood vessels
• Constituting to the digestive bile acids in the intestine for easy digestion.

EFFECTS OF HIGH LEVEL OF CHOLESTEROL IN THE BODY:

Cholesterol are only harmful when they are too much In the body.

When there is too much cholesterol in your body, it builds up in the walls of your arteries, causing a process called atherosclerosis, a form of heart disease which involves the clogging or blocking of arteries or blood vessels.

The arteries then becomes narrowed and blood flow to the heart muscle is slowed down or obstructed.

People with this disease (atherosclerosis) have greater chance to have heart failure, heart attack, stroke.

High level of cholesterol can also leads to high blood pressure.

When there is too much of cholesterol in the body it builds up the wall of the arteries and the arteries become hardened and narrowed with cholesterol plaque and calcium, then the heart has to strain much harder to pump blood through them. As a result, blood pressure becomes abnormally high and this can lead to heart attack or failure.

SO WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OR SIGNS OF HIGH CHOLESTEROL?

High cholesterol doesn't have any symptoms, it only causes emergency events e.g heart attack or stroke.

HOW TO PREVENT HIGH CHOLESTEROL LEVEL IN THE BODY.

• Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.

As we all know, fruits are very essential in our diet because it does not only provides our body with essential nutrients, but also helps in reducing the risks of diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer and high cholesterol level in the blood.

Fruits like Apples, grapes, strawberries helps to block the body from absorbing cholesterol.

• Eat a lot of beans

Beans are high in cholesterol lowering soluble fiber. Eating a cup of beans a day can lower cholesterol by as much as 10% in 6 weeks.

• Eat garlic

Garlic helps to stop artery clogging plaque at its earliest stage (called nanoplaque), by keeping the individual cholesterol particles from sticking to artery walls.

• Eat fewer of saturated and trans fat.

Saturated fat such as cheese, butter, cream should be avoided.
