NLC, JOHESU and NMA Agree on Withheld Salaries

The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) unanimously agree that the withheld salaries of JOHESU members for April and May of 2018 was not right. Speaking at the International Nurses Day celebration at the NAF Conference Center Abuja, the National and global leader of labour Comrade Ayuba Wabba mni described the withholding of the April and May salaries as illegality. He explained that the strike conducted by JOHESU was legal as there was a breach of collective bargaining agreements by the ministry of health. He called on the ministry to expedite action to forestall industrial disharmony in the health sector.

Speaking also at the event the NMA president Dr Francis Adedayo Faduyile, while delivering his good will message said he equally agrees with the NLC president and that refusal to pay JOHESU members their salaries was wrong. He further reiterate the call to join hands together for the good of the patients in the hospital. He caution against disunity which is been championed by politicians to divide and rule the health care providers.

Speaking in the same also at the event the National President of JOHESU and the National President of Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria Comrade Biobelemoye Josiah also concur with the two previous speakers and urge the Minister of health to do the needful to ensure industrial harmony. He appreciated the new found love with NMA and used the opportunity to call on the leadership of NMA to weigh in on their members who are at the helm of affairs to do the needful to ensure industrial harmony.

Earlier on the acting National President of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives – NANNM Comrade Musa Mamman had also lend his voice to the withheld salaries and asked that it be paid in the interest of peace and harmony.

The General Secretary of NANNM Comrade T. A. Shettima while delivering his vote of thanks show his displeasure that both ministers of health and his labour and productivity did not make it to the ceremony but equally appreciated their representation. He also lend his voice to the call for the payment of the withheld salaries as it amount to illegality.

The event is a yearly celebration of Nurses and what they do and it is celebrated around the birthday of the founder of modern nursing Florence Nighting miale. This year’s theme is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Health for all. It is being attended by nurses and midwives from across the nation. The weeks effect continues with scientific sessions.
