i'm really impressed on the way you people socialise in this thread. Keep it up! I'm currently given admission to study geology in UNIZIK. We will start school on 25th october. Pls i need information on the most relevant text book or article that will boost my knowledge and consequently invigorate me into making 1st class, or at least 2.1 in school. Post your comment here or send to gozie4peace@yahoo.com. Thanks and may God grant us our heart desires

Is there any future for the geoscientists?

@aduhube, it all depends on the school, you can pay between $5,000-$10,000 as the first semester tuition,
Please inbox me @ vinshyne@yahoo.com on a list of these schools.I made a 3rd class grade in Geology and
i have been working as an administrator in an oil an gas/construction firm with 3yrs experience, although i have saved
a reasonable amount of money, but i'm still battling with what school will accept me for PDG studies prior to masters.
Kindly advice!

I am glad I can  granites and olivines here.Well, there are a lot of opportunities out there for us geologist esp.We can work in construction, oil and gas, water etc.I will give u an overview abt working with Shell, they take mostly freshers,u write the exams, which is basicall the Geology of Nigeria, the diff formations akata, agbada, calabar flank etc.If u succeed ,u move to the interview,3 segments,Sustainable development, business and a symposium.if u succeed u move to medicals. Then SITP in warri.Basically what they teach u in SITP is geology.Nearly all professions applyin for a job in Shell must go thru the basics of Geology. Its compulsory. So to all granites and olivines, jst equip urselves wit a few more courses while u wait, don't sweat ur neck abt doin Petrel and the rest if u can not afford it,just do the smaller courses, wen these coys employ u,they will train u.Esp Schlumberger,I did Petrel while an I.T. Student in my 3rd year.Schlumberger trained me fully,it was the favour of God.Funny huh!!!Wish u all success.

Hey I was having a hard time finding places to work once I graduated but I ended up hooking up with Baker Hughes.  They're a really great company to work for anyways, if any of you guys are also having trouble looking for any career opportunities you should check out some of theBaker Hughes jobs.

am a geologist with an MSC and working as field engineer in LWD/field petrophysics. currrently the trend is fastly changing as companies prefer, not just msc or phd but some experience cos they dont want to spend money and time training graduates with no technical background. so i'll advise b4 yu lunch your self in to the big waters (shell, chevron and the likes), it good you find some of these smaller comapanies with no fantastic pay. but just have at the back of your mind that yu are building from there. sometimes ou problems as geologist is the mindset we built from school, that once we are don with school we find ourselves in big waters, and when yu get a job in a bank or ungeological setup, yu get discouraged. i tell yu every experience counts.
so look for smaller stuff and concentrate and one day the big ones will coming knocking.
happy new year!!!

There are many. . . Petrel, Geolog etc. The point is Do you have access to a software package and a suite of logs? OR Have you just got logs on paper? If it is the former you can get assistance from the software distributor either online or in the company you are using and if it is the latter, you should be able to do this manually with help from text books and GOOGLE!

I just wonder why people are more interested in learning how to use a software and not asking specific technical questions. undecided smh!

ALSO, CAN SOMEONE MOVE THIS TO THE CAREER THREAD!

These days jobs are difficult to come by. It‘s a general Nigerian problem, and not peculiar to the field of Geology/Geophysics(Did your brother study Geology also?). Nevertheless, there are so much opportunities out there, both within and outside the country. I would advise you face your studies for now, to ensure you graduate with good grades, gather information on your field as much as possible(like what you are doing on this forum), and trust God too. I don‘t think you are in the wrong place.

Hello Geologists,

This week, I'm featuring a Geologist as the "Professional of The Week". It was a very enlightening interview and I encourage every professional or budding professional out there to read on.

(Please note that due to the level of her position in the industry, we've kept her identity anonymous but in future editions we may include names and pictures).

Name: Anonymous

Location: Lagos

Profession: Geology, a Management Level staff in an Oil Company in Nigeria

1. Why did you choose Geology as your profession?

It wasn't in my plan to have a career in Geology. I was admitted to study Computer Science in a Nigerian university. In my second year sometime in the 70s, the university lacked facilities/computers and didn't want to teach us only theory. We were therefore given the option to transfer to either mathematics or any department in the School of Physical Sciences. The only professional course in the School of Physical Sciences at the university was Geology. I choose Geology.

Please continue reading all 8 interview questions using this link http://thekrine..com/2012/01/professional-of-week-geologist.html

Please send the link to your friends too, especially students.

Cheers

The 'money' is not really clean. The exact amount of ore deposits I daresay are unknown. Apart from Limestone mining which the big cement companies have cornered, not much is done.

When appropriate 1: 20 000 geological maps are produced then the proper quantification of ore deposits can be carried out. Lecturers are busy drilling boreholes instead of pressurizing the appropriate ministry (solid minerals or interior) to map this country.

Thank you, mycvclinic. I hope my response isn‘t coming too late.
I would like to ask her/him these question:
1. What‘s your advice for young, inexperienced Nigerian geologists/geophysicists who are finding it very difficult to secure jobs as a result of their inexperience? Industrial training, which would have provided these experience, while still in school, are not also easy to come by lately.
2. There are speculations that the world is running out of crude oil. What‘s your take on this, and what does the future hold for geoscientists if these speculations are indeed true?
@mycvclinic. How do we get to know the professional you will interview next? I would want to follow it irrespective of the profession.
