When a pedestrian is hit by car, it is usually fatal! Therefore, here are some essential tips to guide you on how to survive a car accident as a pedestrian.

Road accidents can involve two cars, a car and as object or a car and a pedestrian. Most of the time, those involving pedestrians end up being quite fatal. In as much as everyone hopes never to get hit by a car, it's important to know what to do when you're in such situation. You might be on the side walk, trying to cross the road or even in an open field with no vehicular activity, and still get hit. It doesn't mean you have resign to fate to either survive or not. Here are some essential tips to guide you on how to survive a car accident as a pedestrian.

1. Be at alert when walking close to the road

Before thinking of how to survive a car accident as a pedestrian, you need to know how to avoid it. Being at alert is a first step. It's important to always be aware of what's going on around you while walking on the road side. In as much as you know that no vehicle should have any business on the sidewalk, look back and sideways once in a while to be sure. Also keep an ear to the ground for strange sounds like screeching. Before crossing the road, look left, right, left again.

2. Always walk facing oncoming vehicles

When walking on the side of the road, walk in opposite direction to cars on the lane closest to you. That way you can easily dock when you notice eminent danger. This technique also goes a long way in helping you survive when an accident eventually occurs - as would be explained in subsequent tips.

3. Jump onto the bonnet

When you notice a car approaching and you can't get out of the way on time, move towards the car and jump on the bonnet. This stunt happens a lot in Hollywood movies - and it works real life. It's better to be hit by the windshield than be crushed by the tyres and tons of metal underneath. Therefore, dive towards the bonnet and windshield sideways to reduce the impact of the hit. Keep in mind that most cars made after 1970 were made to be shatter proof. It's likely to absorb the force exerted on it without causing harm to the object. So you don't have to worry about being pierced or cut by glass. You would mostly bounce off or above the vehicle.

4. Protect your head

The head is one of the most delicate parts of the body. Hence the need to protect your head while jumping on the bonnet of the car. Use your arms to protect your head with your palms straight at the back of your neck like someone who is docking. You would likely sustain injuries on other parts of your body and even a few broken bones but they won't be as life threatening as a hit on the head.

Finally, when you land on the floor after the impact, do not try to run off immediately so you don't get hit by oncoming vehicles or aid a concussion. First, look around to see if there is eminent danger before making any further move. If there isn't, wait for help to come.

grin

very funny, but even if tipper or trailer was to hit someone, the fact that your leg isnt pinned on the ground or resisting the incoming force might reduce the impact, even if i dont pray to experience it, i go follow OP advise if it happens to my enemy

5. When you are walking by the road side holding a child, let the child be held in your hand that is away from the road
If your right side is towards the road, hold the child with your left hand. If it is your left side that is at the road, hold the child with your right hand and hold whatever you are carrying with the other hand that is closer to the road.

6. If you do not have choice but to back oncoming traffic or car, always look behind you. Don't assume the driver is careful not to hit you.

One of the popular rules in driving is that you must think that other drivers or road users except only you, is insane. Even as a pedestrian, having this believe will make you watchful and get you prepared for anything that could happen.

7. When you are at traffic light and the light shows red for cars to stop, be sure the oncoming cars have totally stopped before you cross the road.

You have to be extra careful and vigilant when it is a commercial bus that is approaching you before the light shows red. Most of the commercial vehicle drivers don't obey traffic lights or signs, you may have to wave at them before you cross their front even at Zebra crossing. They drive like they own the road and the law is under them.

8. Do not wear your ear piece on major roads.
Using the earpiece on roads or in public places has sent a lot of people to early grave. Sad enough, ear piece can make an oncoming Train unnoticeable despite how big and noisy a train can be.

9. Do not make phone calls while walking on the road.
You can answer the call and tell the caller to call you back when you are off the road. No call or message can be as important as having your life or being in good health. Do not chat or press phone on the road, it is a very bad habit. Using the phone on the road is as bad to a pedestrian as it is to a motorist.

10. Don't walk on the road when you are drunk. Also wear a bright coloured cloth if you must walk by the road side at night.
