Many Nigerians were wondering why Mohammed Abubakar, the outgoing governor of Bauchi State was jittery when it appeared he would lose the March governorship election to his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opponent, Bala Mohammed. He was against it when the election was declared inconclusive and allegedly even went to President Buhari for help.

Eventually, he sought a court order to stop the supplementary polls, but not only did he lose at the court, but also lost the election to Bala. It wasn’t until recently that we realise that Abubakar has dug a pit, which he knew he would fall into if the election didn’t go his way.

In 2017, the governor signed the Bauchi State Public Property and Funds Recovery Tribunal Act. The law was meant to prosecute corrupt administrations and ensure they pay for any mismanagement of public funds that occurred under them.

But knowing that he is a culprit himself, after losing his re-election bid, he sent a bill to the Assembly seeking to repeal the same law.
