Femi Gbajabiamila Among Top Nigerians Convicted Overseas by Modarun(m): 11:33pm On May 24, 2019
This is a story by Usman Jamilu Rahman written from Atlanta Georgia, United States of America. The writer happens to live in Atlanta, Georgia, where Femi Gbajabiamila was convicted for stealing an accident victim’s insurance claim of $25,000 before 2003, when he became a national lawmaker in Nigeria.
Notable Nigerians convicted abroad include Femi Gbajabiamila, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, Umaru Dikko, James Ibori, Godwin Opara, Bukola Oriola and many more, for various crimes and offences
Nigeria’s image in the international community is terribly, bad and scary, due to financial scams, looting, drug trafficking, fraudulent deals, among others.
Many well meaning Nigerians who travel abroad often times meet with embarrassing situations where they are perceived to be corrupt once they are identified as Nigerians.
The most disgraceful and worrisome case in all these international crimes involves Femi Gbajabiamila, who represents Surulere 1 Federal Constituency and Leader of the House of Representatives, now aiming to be the Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives.
Gbajabiamila has managed to keep his conviction under wraps and has since enjoyed the privilege of making laws for the Nigerian people since 2003.
It would rub off negatively on the rest of Nigeria if a man convicted for acts described as “willful dishonesty” by the Supreme Court of Georgia, United States of America, eventually becomes the Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives.
In a statement of grievance filed before the Supreme Court of Georgia by one Mrs. Hadyyatou Barry, Femi Gbajabiamila acting on information he stumbled on, proceeded to impersonate and pose as a lawyer to Hadyyatou Barry, signed for and received insurance claims monies in cheque for the sum of $25,000, cashed same into his trustee’s account, withdrew same and fled to Nigeria in the wake of 2003.
Meanwhile, the accident victim, Mrs. Hadyyatou Barry who lost one eye, seven teeth, two broken legs in the accident was left with no money and access to medical treatment, to wallow in complete penury.
Despite frantic attempts by Femi Gbajabiamila to cover his track over the years and recently, one Hon. Abdulmumuni Jibrin, who is alleged to have petitioned the Supreme of Georgia to seal off the records of proceedings where Femi Gbajabiamila pleaded guilty to acts of willful dishonesty, Nigerians and the world still have access to details of the embarrassing conduct of a man who has become one of Nigeria’s known legislators.
The ascension of a man convicted by the Supreme Court of Georgia in the United States of America for alleged impersonation, fraudulently cashing a cheque and embezzling proceeds of an accident victim’s insurance claims money to the exalted office of Speaker, Nigerian House of Representatives will definitely remind the international community and the world at large that Nigeria and Nigerians are fantastically corrupt.
Stories about Nigeria read, watched and heard abroad are often about vices, such as corruption, looting, drug trafficking, financial scams, fraudulent deals, crimes, kidnapping, Boko Haram insurgency, militancy in the oil-producing areas, negative politicking, mass hunger, mass illiteracy, and poor hygiene, among others.
Many well-meaning Nigerians who travel abroad often times meet with embarrassing situations where they are perceived to be corrupt once they are identified as Nigerians.
Former British Prime Minister, David Cameron took a swipe at Nigeria while having a conversation with the Queen of England and other notable British leaders just ahead of an international Anti-Corruption summit held in London.
In a video that went viral across the globe, David Cameron was heard describing Nigeria and Afghanistan as “fantastically corrupt” countries.
Flowing from David Cameron’s fantastically corrupt remarks about Nigeria, a renowned CNN correspondent, Nick Robertson described the situation as “embarrassing” for Nigerians.
When asked, President Buhari admitted to waiting journalists that Nigeria was indeed corrupt as he made his way to the said Anti-Corruption summit.
Many Nigerians are languishing in jails across the world for various embarrassing crimes that continue to dent and pull down the image of the country.
Crimes ranging from financial crimes, Internet scams, insurance frauds, impersonation, forgery, drug trafficking, love scams, money laundering and many more, have earned many Nigerians convictions in many countries of the world.

You're one of the most confused clowns on this forum. On one hand you're crying "Biafra or death" and on the other hand you're resident unapologetic nairaland PDP/Nigeria mouthpiece.

You lack identity. Your chosen moniker also shows you are ashamed of your true identity, hence the "dokyoloye" nonsense you chose.

A thief is a thief and Yoruba do not defend thieves no matter how highly placed.

What we have in Nigeria are Houses of Thieves period.

Gbajabiamila jumped like Tinubu in the States. Ezeribe, the arms dealer throughout Europe also jumped. He could have spent years in prison but retired to Nigeria as politician.

In the case of Ezeribe, he did nothing that other white arm dealers did not do. Indeed, you cannot call him a criminal for doing what others do.

But wait o. Can any section or ethnic point to another one as thieve when thievery is a full time job in Nigeria.

The guy asking for his own thief may not have been born when one Senate President after another faced impeachment or resignation for thief-thief.

Yoruba and Igbo are exposed all the time as thieves abroad. It is just that one specializes in white collar crimes while the other do violent crime.

Hausa do well, Dem nor dey steal abroad like Southerners. Farouk Mutarla Mohamed was an exception.

You are very correct. Gbajabiamila ran away from the USA after stealing people's money. That guy is a crook and every well-maeaning media organization should start sounding it very clear. Vanguard, guardian, Channel's, Daily independent, Daily trust. Etc should write editorials about the suitability of crook Gbajabiamila becoming the number 4 man in this country.

If he were a northerner like Atiku or a SSner like Ibori or even an Igbo man, Yoruba media like the nation newspaper and Tribune, TVC will keep shouting themselves hoarse, and making noise about integrity.

Gbajabiamila is a thief, pump and plain and Nigerians should know.
