They didn't have a church ceremony because of religious, differences, this implies they both came to this decision mutually. They didn't have it because the husband most likely didn't agree to it and the mother yielded. And now, after how many years, he decides it's okay, again coming to the decision himself. What would've been the harm for them to go to a church and then go to a mosque when they first married? Why can't people genuinely compromise?

Religion is divisive everywhere.

People from different xtian sects were slaughtering each other in Europe for almost two thousand years. Only relatively recently did it stop.
