Shehu Sani, lawmaker representing Kaduna Central at the Senate has revealed what must be done for the creation of state and local government police to take effect.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Monday received the report of the presidential panel on the reform of special anti-robbery squad (SARS), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The report recommended the creation of state police to help curtail the rising insecurity across the country.

Receiving the report, the president thanked the panel for their work and directed Mohammed Adamu, the inspector-general of police to meet with the NHRC to work out the modalities of implementing the report within three months from the day it was received.

But the outgoing lawmaker has said before the creation of the force, the Nigerian Constitution has to be amended as this is the only way possible for the implementation of the report.

State police in its context is great but state police relating to our politicians and average Nigerian mind is something am still trying to figure out how it will benefits the people on the street.
An average Nigerian and politicians is self centered and will use the state police to their advantage as we all know what happens during election even though the governors are not in dull contracts of the police.

Your fear about State Police should also extend to the Federal Police. You should be aware that the Army and Police were both used by the Buhari Federal government to rig the election. But the Police and Army have not been disbanded because the benefit of having them outweighs the negatives. Same logic should apply to the State Police.

It's long overdue. This has always been my recommendation in my several posts and it's finally here. The life of Nigerians are however too precious to use the constitution to delay the implementation.

If it can work in some country why can't it work in Naija? Policing will be closer to the people. But the implementation could take 4 to 6 years.
