I am wondering how Ghana plans to repay $2b.

They must be thinking that Chinese loans are Paris Club loans, so that you can turn around and plead for cancellation tomorrow.
Ghana isn't a poor country. 2 billion dollar is not much for the country. They just recently complete Tema sea port expansion project which cost 1.5 billion dollar . It will be open by the end of this MONTH.

Joe Ghartey, Ghana’s minister of railways development, says he has cancelled the MoU with the China Railway Construction Corporation Corporation (International) Nigeria Limited (CRCC-Nigeria) “for breach of confidentiality”.

Ghana had entered into CRCC- Nigeria for the construction and rehabilitation of a 560-kilometre standard gauge railway line.

However, after a report in TheCable comparing railway contract costs in Ghana with Nigeria’s, the minister came under pressure to do “damage control”.

In a statement sent to TheCable on Monday, Ghartey acknowledged that the ministry signed an MoU with CRCC-Nigeria.

TheCable had reported that CRCC offered to rehabilitate and construct a 560-kilometre standard gauge railway line for Ghana at $2 billion, with terminals at Aflao and Elubo.

“Messrs CRCC-Nigeria expressed interest in supporting the Ministry to develop and modernise Ghana’s railway network, particularly the Trans-ECOWAS line, which runs along the coast between Aflao, on the border with Togo, and Elubo, on the border with Cote d’Ivoire,” the statement read.

“The purpose of the MoU is for CRCC-Nigeria to undertake feasibility studies through the use of independent consultants.

“CRCC-Nigeria is responsible for verifying the project cost as estimated by the feasibility studies and also raise capital to finance the project.”

However, the minister said his ministry was yet to respond to a proposal by CRCC-Nigeria to establish assembly plants for building locomotive coaches and wagons.

The ministry was, however, silent on the 340-kilometre Eastern line project that is estimated to cost $2.2 billion which will link Accra, Tema and Kumasi,

In March, Rotimi Amaechi, Nigeria’s former minister of transportation, had told reporters that the $1.5 billion allocated for the 146-kilometer Lagos-Ibadan project has been altered due to additional construction work on the project but refused to disclose the new sum.

TheCable understands that the new cost is $2 billion — which is exactly the amount CRCC-Nigeria is offering to construct and rehabilitate the 560-kilometre standard gauge railway line in Ghana.

stop lying, from The Ministry of Railways in Ghana.

The ministry has reached a Concession Agreement with the Ghana European Railway Consortium (GERC) for the construction of the Eastern Railway line project at the cost of $2.2 billion dollars.

The 340 kilometre project, which would run from the Tema Port through Accra, Koforidua and end in Kumasi; is a Built, Operate and Transfer (BOT) project, with the Government having a 30 per cent share.

It would take three years to complete the project; upon which GERC would then operate it for 27 years before handing over to the Government.

The project would have a branch line at Bosuso to Kyebi in the Eastern Region to the proposed bauxite mines in the area, and it would also be linked up to the inland port at Boankra in the Ashanti Region.

The negotiations for a new standard gauge Eastern Railway lines was reached, on Thursday, at Peduase in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern Region between Mr Joe Ghartey, Minister of Railways Development and Mr Heinz Kroczek, GERC representative.

GERC is made up of 16 investment companies from Ghana, Germany, Austria, France and Italy.

Some of the companies are the Keteke Group (Ghana), ARISU (Germany), Ralf Bankenbach (Germany), Havellandische Eisenbahn (Germany), Voestalpine (Austria), IPIMED (France) and Salcef (Italy)

Under the project, GERC proposes to build a double line railroad with maintenance roads on each side and it would also have fencing on each side to protect the rail lines.

The system would consist of three major stations in Accra, Koforidua and Kumasi; with additional 30 minor stations ad stopping points along the line.

The entire rail line would be electrified, thus the locomotives and coaches would be electric, the first in the country.

GERC would also build a sleeper factory in the country, which would have the capacity to produce over 1,000 sleepers per day, with the factory employing 550 full time workers.

Mr Ghartey said the outcome of the negotiations would be taken to Cabinet for approval, after which it would be placed before Parliament.

He said in 1898, it took five years for rail to be constructed from Takoradi to Kumasi, however, in today’s era of technology, he was hopeful that the single line would reach Kumasi by the end of 2020.

The Project, is the first of its kind in magnitude, to be executed under BOT in sub-Saharan Africa.

this story is crap. how come this news has not been reported in Ghana? how and why will Ghana's minister of railways development send a press release to a nigerian news channel and not the Ghanaian press, that holds more relevance for his government?

can anyone produce anything to authenticate the involvemnet of CRCC nigeria in the project in Ghana? CRCC is a chinese company with headquarters in china. To the best of my knowledge, Ghana is dealing with the headquarters of the chinese company in china, not its nigeria affiliate. that is how chinese companies operate. anyone with a verifiable contrary insight can share it.

ignore this sham story. it was planted by vested nigerian interests, as usual.

This is ignorant statement. What is wrong In a flooded airport. Malaysia most famous airport got flooded . One of the biggest soccer match event. Manchester against Chelsea. Water was seen scooping out of the field.

Terminal 3 wasn't flooded actually, it was a propaganda. And the part of the airport that was flooded had been reconstructed .

ghana MAY have a smaller economy, but each day we see at least 1,000 hungry, forong people arrive in Ghana from lagos every day in search of economic refuge

Secondly this particular one keeps talking about
"Construction and rehabilitation of a 560km standard guage railway line"? They have standard guage already? How many km of the new mou is being built and how many km is being rehabilitated?
