It depends on what you’re selling and at what stage your product/service is...If you already have customers and thinking of scaling, Nairaland isn’t a great place to advertise-depends on your product though.

Nairaland is just okay for new businesses where you need to make FEW sales and acquire seed customers who you can retain and grow from there. There are a few big brands in here, but you’re most likely not a big brand.

Aside that, Nairaland isn’t a great place in my opinion to advertise. I would consider using other forms of marketing;
1. Google ads: Can be expensive, but effective.
2. Facebook ads: Can be effective too, though google ads trumps it, but cheaper than google ads

I'm a marketer too and have done a great deal of sales online but from the research & past advert campaigns I'm beginning to think NL adverts are not as effective (in terms of conversion) as other platforms.

If you notice most marketers shy away from advertising on NL for a few reasons below:

1. NL and the support team don't really take user feedback seriously.
2. You can only advertise on NL by placing a banner ad... and i think most people online have developed a blind spot to certain advertising styles like: pop ups, in-stream ads, and banner ads. And the reason is because it's kinda disruptive in nature. Non-disruptive ads on the other hand kinda blends in smoothly and would hardly disrupt your flow when you're on NL.

Non-disruptive ads like "sponsored contents' blends into the newsfeed perfectly and will always convert better than the big ole Banner ads.

I mean, if you take a look at the top 50 most visited sites in Nigeria on Alexa.com and you'll notice that apart from e-commerce sites, gambling sites and news sites whose layout is usually banner-style, other platforms either completely eliminate banner ads (esp. on mobile view) because it's disruptive or make use of both... well, apart from Nairaland.

Nairaland doesn't even make use of non-disruptive advertising. I've suggested it a couple of times to the mods but like i said its above them. l think they have very little say on how the forum is run.

3. Tracking. And flexibility. I don't need to talk much on this esp if you run Ads on other international platforms like FB, Twitter and Google.

For most Nigerian sites, it's just pump & dump. Meaning, you pump in the advert funds and pray to God because you're basically flying blind w/o detailed data on how or where your money goes while the ad is active.

They really don;t invest enof in the advert bots on the backend nothwithstanding the fact that advertisers are the live-wire of their business.

Porn sites like xvideos even give you a wide variety of options like -- location targeting, keyword targeting, and gender-based targeting.. but then this is Nigeria, asking for more than the basics is usually a step taken too far so we gotta manage the BS no matter how bad it stinks
