The Ondo state police Command has apprehended a traditional head of a community at Ofosu village of Akure south local government area in the state, Chief Lawrence Adebayo Ojo in connection with series of armed robberies in Akure metropolis. Chief Lawrence Adebayo Ojo, aged 54, is the Olu of one of the villages at Ofosu until his arrest as one of those who killed the Bursar of the Anglican church in Akure. Briefing newsmen, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo state, Mr Andie Undie said the traditional head would be charged to court with other suspected bank robbers after the conclusion of investigation. “On 28th of May, 2019 at about 1600hrs, one Adeyinka Adeniyi ‘m’ of No:2 Mama Eko street off Orita Obele Estate, Akure went to Zenith Bank Alagbaka Branch with his Toyota Corolla Reg. No ISD 233 FS and withdrew the sum of Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira ₦450,000.00. “He (Adeniyi) kept the money inside the safe of his car and drove to his building site at Adegbola Area Akure, unknown to him that he was being trailed by suspected Armed Robbers”. Undie Added that, “He parked the car and went into the site. When he came back, he discovered that his car was broken into and the money carted away and the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS) were promptly contacted. Detectives swung into action and arrested one Martins Adetoye Kolawole ‘m’ Aged 47 and Chief Lawrence Adebayo Ojo ‘male’ Aged 54”. The CP noted that, “On interrogation, they confessed to the commission of the crime, their Operational vehicles which they always used to monitor their victims from the Bank, one Toyota Camry with Reg., No. JJJ 752 EKY and a Siena bus with Reg., No LSR 792 BE, were impounded. Meanwhile investigation is still ongoing as to track down one Gbenga ‘m’ who is a member of the gang”. Undie Further said, “It is sad to say that this same gang was responsible for the death of one Gabriel Abiodun a bursar and verger to the Anglican Church diocese Akure recently, as one of the suspects in that incident Martins Adetoye was easily identified by one of the lucky victims of the attack”. In an interview, Chief Lawrence Adebayo Ojo denied the allegation he was arrested for, explaining that one Gbenga who was his friend used his Siena car to rob unknown to him. However, another suspect, Martins Adetoye Kolawole arrested with the Chief, confessed that Adebayo usually got share from stolen money. “Last time we robbed, he got #90,000 and there was a time he got #40,000, so he (chief) is part of us and he knows Gbenga very well”. As at the time of filing in this report, the two suspects are still cooling their head in the police cell.
