Wole Soyinka who released a statement on Tuesday titled, “Democracy Day Primer (1)", stated that it's bad for anyone to brand June 12 struggle a Yoruba project.

The Nobel Laureate noted that even before the annunciation of June 12 as Democracy Day, the “same nihilist voices” were already primed to degrade it and ridicule what should be a potent signpost for future generations. Wole Soyinka whose statement was aimed at individuals trying to reduce the worth of the June 12, 1993 presidential election struggle by rubbing it in ethnic garb, stated that it's bad for anyone to brand June 12 struggle a Yoruba project as it is no different from the original act of annulling an event “universally acknowledged as the fairest, the most orderly and peaceful election ever conducted in Nigerian history; a chastening contrast to the 2019 general elections.”

He said, “Next, I found it equally lamentable that anyone should attempt to reduce the June 12 struggle to that of an ethnic project. It is a depressing travesty of the realities, a denial of the existence of a nation’s collective sense of justice and its tenacity in pursuit of that objective.

“No one denies that the immediate family of a victim of robbery feels the pangs of dispossession more keenly than others. The truth, however, remains that the entirety of the compound itself was violated, arrogantly and contemptuously dispossessed."

It is envy sir. Envy has made some people forget history to the extent they are detesting all the accolades being given to June 12. Despite that the victory of MKO cuts across all ethnic and religious divide.

Its a wonder sir.

Everybody knows the struggles of June 12 culminated into the handover of power back to civilian authorities in 1999.

But the military, either out of pure mischief decided to use May 29, instead of just waiting few more days for June 12. Or maybe they didnt want to upset Abacha and IBB boys that were still many in the military as at then.

Abiola spent his financial and time resources on the elections. The Nigerian populace did same, but some few people ganged up and decided not to respect the wish of majority of the Nigerian people.

It is fair to recognize the struggles of June 12 and recognize it as a day of democracy.

Kudos to the Buhari administration.

June 12 was more than a struggle to reclaim MKO Abiola’s mandate. It was a total struggle to put an end to military rule in Nigeria. The Abacha junta used all available state organ to paint the struggle with the brush of ethnicity and that is what led to the branding of the struggle as a Yoruba project. When our political elites want to achieve their selfish aims, they use ethnicity and religion to divide the people.

We must, however, appreciate lots of northerners that publicly joined the June 12 struggle despite the ethnic coloration of the campaign. People like Shehu Sanni, Balarabe Musa, Col. Umar Dangiwa, Bagaulda Kaltho and lots of others too numerous to mention. People like Kaltho paid the ultimate price for the struggle. Their effort and sacrifice shall never be forgotten.
