The immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, has congratulated Senator Ahmad Lawan and Mr Femi Gbajabiamila on their election as Senate President and Speaker of the 9th National Assembly.

Dogara also felicitated with Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Idris Wase for their emergence as Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker, respectively.

He particularly promised to support Gbajabiamila in his leadership of the House.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Turaki Hassan, the former Speaker described the emergence of new leaders of the National Assembly as the reflection of the wishes of the majority of senators and honourable members.

While praying to God for guidance to the new House leadership, Dogara also restated his continued commitment and support towards the success of the 9th National Assembly through enthronement of democratic ideals and legislative interventions geared towards the development of Nigeria.

“It is my sincere hope that the 9th  Assembly under their leadership will consolidate on the unprecedented landmark achievements of the 8th Assembly and even surpass our records. We ask God to give them the wisdom and strength to pilot the affairs of their respective Chambers and contribute their quota in enthroning good governance in Nigeria. They can always count on my support,” he said.

The fundamental cause of the hostility between President Buhari and National Assembly led Senator Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogara could be traced to sharp differences in backgrounds.

On one hand, majority of the lawmakers share political background that expects 'every political office to come with negotiated financial entitlements'. On the other hand, Pres. Buhari has military background where people are ready to willingly and selflessly pay supreme price for their country.

Consequently, while the lawmakers expected the usual 'give and take' from the Executive, the President found it difficult to understand why a group of people who swore to work for their country and were being handsomely paid should be 'lobbied' to do that work. This created conflict that persisted throughout the tenure of 8th Assembly.

Unfortunately, the causative factors of this conflict are still there as 9th Assembly takes off.

Therefore, if Sen. Ahmed Lawan wants to succeed, he needs to recognize this key difference in political backgrounds and work around it in order to retain the support of his colleagues while relating well to the presidency. If he does this well, there will be only necessary 'point of view' disagreements, which can easily be resolved.

Interestingly, David Mark had it smoother because leadership of NASS shared the same negotiated entitlement background with members of the Executive at the time he was Senate President.

This is maturity even tho tinubu and a few Apc Power brokers never congratulated them. In hindsight I believe if Atiku didn’t leave Apc Saraki and dagora wud still be victors in the senate.

Some good measure of sportsmanship displayed here. Leaders are always different from rulers. Dogara played this well.

This is the fundamental divide for Nigeria. However, most Nigerians are not visionary enough to perceive it. It goes to show certain goons in southern Nigeria can be impressively clueless .
