JONATHAN REJECTED MEND OIL BLOCK DEMANDS

There is heightened fear and uncertainty among the security chiefs in the country following the massive bomb blasts that rocked the Federal Capital Territory during the golden jubilee celebrations on Friday, SUNDAY PUNCH has gathered.

The blast believed to be the first of such violent incident in Abuja was said to have rattled the security chiefs and the Presidency.

Our correspondent learnt on Saturday that the unexpected blasts that claimed 14 lives and injured 46 others shook the newly appointed security chiefs and has now put them under serious pressure to secure the country ahead of the 2011 elections.

Indeed, arising from the Friday incident, it was gathered that the security chiefs at a meeting with the President on Friday night resolved to send out special security squad after the masterminds and members of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta who claimed responsibility for the explosion.

A top security officer who confided to our correspondent on Saturday, said one week had been given for the arrest and perhaps liquidation of the MEND operatives.

[b]It was learnt that the Presidency was of the conviction that the militants were being used by opposition elements who were desperate to get at the government.

MEND is believed to have been infiltrated and given huge amount of money to attack the Jonathan administration with the aim of weakening his chances in the 2011 presidential election.

The source said MEND‘s problem with the President started over his refusal to allocate an oil bloc to them.

He said, “The President told them he does not have the power to give them an oil bloc that they demanded. He said on what ground would he justify the gift of the oil bloc and this was where he started having problems with MEND. He knows that the militants are being used by his political adversaries and he has directed security chiefs to quash them like the parasites they are.”

According to him, the government has closed its eyes to the bunkering activities of MEND in the creeks as a way of placating them and deepening the amnesty programme, but the Friday onslaught against innocent Nigerians was deemed the last straw.

All heads of security agencies are expected to finalise the strategies for the incursion into the Niger Delta to fish out suspects linked to the explosion.

All heads of security agencies are expected to finalise the strategies for the incursion into the Niger Delta to fish out suspects linked to the explosion.

Meanwhile, police have taken over the scene of the blast at Shehu Shagari Way to piece together evidence that could provide an insight into the kind of explosives used in the blast.

All the roads to the scene of incident have been cordoned off and vehicle owners were not allowed to take them away ”until further notice.”

No fewer than 12 vehicles were badly damaged and a number of others had either their front or back windscreens shattered by the explosion.

The refusal of the authorities to allow removal of the vehicles is however generating anxiety among some of the owners who wanted to immediately repair their vehicles.

The owner of an affected Toyota Corolla who craved anonymity said he had attempted to take his car, but was prevented by policemen deployed to secure the scene.

He said, ”The deed has been done and I don‘t know why we are being prevented from taking away our vehicles; it is not as if the government was going to compensate us for the damage. I am only grateful that my car was not totally destroyed in the blast. Where would I have got the money to buy another one?”

This is an ignorant statement.
If the government can get rid of MEND, they would have done so a long time ago.

I am not implicating anybody, but militants have successfully met with campaign teams of some presidential candidates. Questions need be asked.

2011: Militants hold secret meetings with IBB, Buhari
•Ex-military president given conditions
By Tribune 05/09/2010 17:00:00
Written by Idowu Samuel and Emmanuel Adeniyi Monday, 06 September 2010

THERE are indications that President Goodluck Jonathan is yet to strike a deal with leaders of key militant groups in the Niger Delta to strengthen his chances of winning the South-South zone if he decides to run in the 2011 presidential election.
Indications to this effect emerged in the light of efforts by leaders of the militants, who had given up on the government amnesty initiative  to engage presidential aspirants from the North in exploratory talks on how to fit into their presidential programmes.

Two leaders of militant groups which surrendered arms in the wake of the Federal Government’s amnesty had arrived in Abuja last week to hold talks with northern presidential aspirants, including General Ibrahim Babangida and General Muhammadu Buhari.

Nigerian Tribune learnt through aides of the aspirants that the militants complained that they were not being consulted by President Jonathan.

The militant heads were said to have canvassed a view that their full participation in the ongoing political process would enhance their resolve to finally discard the toga of militancy, just as they reportedly expressed dismay that their efforts to dissolve into the campaign programme of President Jonathan were not being appreciated.

It is not certain which specific roles the militants desired to play in the presidential campaigns of the aspirants, whom they reportedly met. However, it was disclosed that tentative agreements were reached by the campaign team of General Buhari that they should make a bold appearance during his inaugural campaign summit scheduled to take place in Abuja any moment from now.

Checks within the IBB campaign organisation revealed that none of the militant leaders was able to meet the Minna general in person, but reportedly met his aides in Abuja and told them about their desire to feature in his campaign programmes.

When the militants met with the representatives of the ex-president recently, Nigerian Tribune gathered that they vowed to support him if he agreed to a one-term tenure and hand over power to a candidate from the South-South geopolitical zone in 2015.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that Babangida was told to rescind his decision of handing over to a candidate from the South-East, choose a vice-president from South-South, implement the white paper of the Ledun Mittee committee and create additional states in the South-South geopolitical zone.

Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that the militants were working with notable South-South governors, who were said to be working underground for different northern presidential aspirants following their irreconcilable differences with President Jonathan.

Every mature mind knows when to step away from anal thinking. Several people have died and your latrine approach does not show respect for their souls.

I always laugh when I read your posts and your insinuations from such posts. According to the Punch article, GEJ met with MEND too. So what's wrong with IBB & Buhari meeting with MEND if your warped logic is to be followed.

Your heroes are terrorists. I'm not surprised though since these same terrorists are GEJ's heroes as well.

The saddest aspect of the event is that GEJ and his cohorts have resorted to blackmailing and mudslinging instead of finding the culprits and bringing them to justice.

This whole MEND madness will stop when we re-define certain political correctness in this country.

1. Oil belongs to the country Nigeria and to nobody even though it is found in your room. Nobody's forefathers planted oil and hence it is a Natural resource which belongs to the State.

2. MEND or Bokoharam have no more responsibility to the local community than the Government and are an illegal Army

3. The essence of Politics is to make a difference in people's lives not to loot. With a Moral possition like that you can deploy the full weight of the Army on MEND to stop their illegal gun running activities.

4. If MEND want to be taken seriously they should convert to a political party. It has been 10years of bunkery, kidnapping, robbery and amassing all kinds of millions and yet there is no evidence that they have lifted even one person out of poverty.

MEND is a criminal organisation and should be treated as such.

MEND are criminals now. Just wondering what MEND would be called by the time GEJ is kicked out in 2011.

I bet they will be called freedom fighters again.
