Never fully hose down an engine....... Simply get a rag + brush, and manually wipe it down..........

It might take you an hour, but an hour well worth it........

A picture of my engine bay, it gets a clean and wipe down every other month............
That's exactly my style.

Honda does it for me. Service it when due (about once in 3 months) and have the mechanic check the ball joints for you whenever you service. I replace the ball joints roughly once a year (some people I know, once in two years).

Just like pencil, the parts are readily available. It's better looking and better interior. Pencil has better reselling value because of stereotyping/hype of Toyota cars.

Apart from covering the necessary areas, always allow the engine to cool first. If you wash the engine when it's still hot, there's tendency for moisture to condense inside some sensitive enclosures. As a result, the sensors will be affected and hence malfunction is experienced. So, if you want to wash the engine; start by washing the body first or let them wash another car just to buy time.

Contrary to this, for me what I do is this. (for camry drop light o) due to too much dirt and dust in my area i hate seeing d engine dirty. Wat I do is I warm up d engine. While it idles i do d "washing". Now for dis wash na d non-sensitive areas o. For d sensitive parts i use rag with stick or screw driver to reach d tight areas and just a little water if need be. My idea is if d engine is hot while i wash d water can heat up and evaporate. Its worked for me so far tho.

After all is said and done... best advice to keeping ur engine bay clean is regular cleaning yourself. Using a wet and dry rag.

How safe is it to wash the car engine while it's still running? Please observe safety.

I believe i mentioned my idea is d heat generated while d engine is running will help d water evaporate faster. It has worked for me... dts d point i am trying to make. I am not advicing anyone to do it dt way.

Yes boss. And by wash just like u said, "safety first" i only do dt with less sensitive components not the electricals or module. For sensitive areas i just use my magic wand (stick), wet rag and dry rag....

It once happened to me, though mine was that the car started idling roughly for about two days and my horn sounded like a cat been stepped on.

grin

Lol, had same experience on my Camry. Idling was so rough.

I now clean my engine by myself. Use fuel to clean d greasy part, then detergent for final wash using foam. For d past two years I have never visited car wash but my engine bay still sparkles like new engine

Oily, greasy dirt that accumulates on an engine can trap some heat, it can cause an engine to overheat or even run hotter than normal. Cleaning your car engine helps determine where oil or grease is coming from so that a small problem like a minor oil leak can be isolated and repaired before it becomes a big one. A lleaky valve-cover gasket for example.

In addition, because oil and grease can accelerate the wear of rubber hoses and plastic parts. And if you’re the type who likes to do some minor maintenance, such as checking the oil level or accessory belts, a clean engine means your hands and clothes are less likely to get dirty.

The major problem in Nigeria is dust........... If the engines are not filthy, leaks would easily be spotted and source traceable.........

Well said. These reasons you listed are so true.

I clean my engine myself. First of all, I disconnect (or remove) the battery to avoid shorting out any circuits. I then fully cover the ECU, alternator, throttle body, MAF sensor? with some polyethylene or other impermeable material before I start.

I apply a mild yet good quality degreaser (I learnt the hard way after using a strange degreaser that left crusty white deposits all over the engine bay angry), and then rinse off manually using water from old household cleaner spray bottles. Cheap and easy solution and it works for me. I avoid pressure washers because the jet/spray may dislodge electrical connections or fittings if the pressure is too high. I will only use a pressure or steam washer if I will be doing the work myself - no commercial washing for me.

The steam pressure washer option is by far the better option but so far I have not been able to get a steam pressure washer at a reasonable cost. Soon...

Disclaimer: it seems some cars handle engine washes better than others. I have never had a problem with cleaning my Toyota engine yet an old Honda Accord i once had always fell sick after an engine wash. I also hear that the deep plug wells of (at least some) Mercedes Benzes make it hard for water to evaporate and this causes problems after an engine wash. Peugeots are also known to develop issues after engine washes (anyway, what do you expect - cats have always hated getting wet tongue)

Sorry to say sir but your assertion of oily/greasy dirt accumulation on an engine causing overheating is very very wrong.
The temperatures of combustion within the engine waaaaaaaaaaaaay higher than au much heat those accumulations can trap. If you dint believe go check out your local taxi engines. See how unkept they are and many of dem still run. True they done have thermostats and all but if oil dirt accumulation could cause overheating those cars should never ever run.

Well I had a similar experience 5 years ago,I took my Honda baby boy for engine wash, after the wash the car simply refused to start,I spent close to 40k on mechanics, different rewire, unnecessary parts,no show, then one rewire came after inspection he said, oga, leave this motor for 1 week make sun beat am,that's how I left the car in the car wash for a week, after that I put key in ignition and it started one hand, since then I have own and driven several cars and I will never wash my engine,if I sell the car to you go and wash the engine,I am not interested.
