Nigeria's secret service said yesterday it foiled a larger plot to detonate at least six car bombs near key government and security buildings in Abuja days before Friday's Independence Day attacks.

The State Security Service said the killers planned a larger attack for Wednesday, September 29 in which at least six car bombs were to be detonated in the vicinity of the presidential villa, parliament and the supreme court.

Spokesman Marilyn Ogar said nine arrests were made.

The act of terrorism which took place on October 1 was planned for Wednesday, "but was foiled as soon as information was received" in the early hours of Tuesday.

"The overriding objective of the group was to scare foreign visitors from attending the 50th anniversary celebrations."

Nigeria's main militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, claimed responsibility, but President Goodluck Jonathan said that investigations showed the perpetrators had used that group's name as a cover.

Ogar said: "They all have direct links with Henry Okah, the incident and some unscrupulous prominent elements in society."

Na lie. I would have asked for a prove, but with the rate of deperation we have seen in the last few days, they will cook up one if non is available.
