Funny enough, B.Sc is not obtainable in Nigerian varsities. My friend had an arranged graduation after over staying on the course but his certificate came with capital Hons. The real difference between B.Sc (Hons) and ordinarily B.Sc where it is offered is that; Ordinarily B.Sc is awarded were the degree does not have a research project component and such degrees takes a shorter period for completion. For instance, 3 years for a 4 years course. The degree is run only in class. Now, a B.Sc (Hons) is awarded where the study involve a research project component as a prerequisite for graduation. This degree normally take a longer period (like one year more than the ordinary B.Sc) for completion. But if u want to be an Ignoramus, simply put; B.Sc is for Graduates who sat with humans as class mates while B.Sc(Hons) goes to those who's classmates were cattle. NOT TRUE! The law says once you’re below 30 at the time of graduation, you are eligible for National Service. The young man was below 30 at the time of his graduation! dson84: |

BSc Hons stand for Bachelor of Science Honours. A Bachelor's degree BSc is generally considered an ordinary pass degree and BSc Hons is looked upon as an extraordinary degree. BSc Hons is supposed to have a heavier syllabus than BSc. Some countries offer the title Hons for a general BSc that lasts for only three years. |

Is quite unfortunate that many people including so called 'graduates' cannot answer this simple question. B.Sc Hons does not mean that you did not graduate on record time of 4 years or 5 years depending on the course duration. People that read 4 years course say ,accounting for instance, and failed maybe GST 101 can still make 2.1 even with an additional year. So will their 2.1 not be B.sc Hons? Secondly, B.sc Hons does not means double honours o. Like reading Computer Science and Mathematics. Thirdly, B.sc Hons does not mean NOT having carry over or spilled over . People fail a 2 unit course in final year, had extra year and still make 2.1 B.sc Hons is when you graduate with a minimum of 3rd class. That is graduating with atleast a 3rd class. However, I feel it actually varies from school to school. Pass is no Hons ,even if you have no extra year or carry over or you read a double honour discipline. |

boyjo: Be arguing there like a fool, “A bachelor's degree can be an honours degree (bachelor's with honours) or an ordinary degree (bachelor's without honours). Honours degrees are classified, usually based on a weighted average (with higher weight given to marks in the later years of the course, and often zero weight to those in the first year) of the marks gained in exams and other assessments. Grade boundaries can vary by institution, but typical values are given below. First-class honours (1st, 1 or I) – typically 70% or higher Second-class honours; Upper division (2:1, 2i or II-1) – typically 60–69% Lower division (2:2, 2ii or II-2) – typically 50–59% Third-class honours (3rd, 3 or III) – typically 40–49% Students who do not achieve honours may be awarded an ordinary degree, sometimes known as a "pass". “ A pass degree is a pass degree either because you did not do a dissertation or you did not get enough grades to make the minimum for a Honours degree which is a 3rd class. It is bad enough getting a 3rd class, Talk less a pass degree. There is nothing like a first class pass degree. If you like get A in all your courses all you will get is a pass degree if you do not do a dissertation. A dissertation is where you apply your powers of analysis and critical thinking to your subject matter. This is the reason some jobs advertise for graduates in any discipline. The assumption that by completing a Honours program and by extension a dissertation you have displayed your ability for analysis and critical thinking. There is a reason why dissertation is usually the most stressful component of a degree course. It requires you to use your brain more that cramming and regurgitating!!!! If you are enrolled on a Honours program whether llb, BA or Bsc and you do not get enough grades to make a 3rd class, you MAY be given a pass degree. You will struggle to get into a masters program in a reputable university or a good job with a reputable company with a pass degree. Either way it is worthless or at best an inferior degree and a waste of time, you are better off with a recognized professional certification than a pass degree. Common sense would alert you to the difference when one is called Honours and the other without honour ie pass. No doubt there are universities that will enrol you from the onset in a non Honours degree course shebi it is to collect fees? but I challenge you to name a reputable University that offers such from the onset, ie admits students specifically to a non Honours Programme. I also challenge you to name a non Honours degree that has a class, I.e 1, 2:1, 2:2 etc. |

lets educate ourselves Difference Between BSc and BSc Hons The difference between BSc and BSc Hons is somewhat confusing as different universities, or different countries, have different practices in offering Honors degrees. In fact, it is true that both of them are academic degrees awarded to undergraduate students. The time period meant for the completion of both the courses is almost the same but it differs in the case of a few countries. Nevertheless, there are reasons to believe that BSc Hons is superior to the BSc degree. It is also considered that getting a job with BSc Hons is easier than getting a placement with the qualification of BSc. Hence http://B.Sc Hons is much preferred to http://B.Sc. Both the courses are of course popular among students. What is BSc? A Bachelor’s degree or BSc is generally considered as an ordinary pass degree. A regular BSc degree takes three to four years for the candidate to complete. This is referring to a general degree. For a special degree, it can take four to five years to complete. Moreover, the submission of dissertation is not necessary in the case of BSc degree. This happens when the BSc is a general degree and not a special degree. If it is a special degree, then one has to hand over a dissertation. What is BSc Hons? BSc Hons means Bachelor of Science (Honors). It takes four to five years for a person to complete BSc Hons. BSc Hons is looked upon as an extraordinary degree. In some countries, you cannot find BSc Hons degree at all whereas, in countries like Australia, Britain, Canada, India, and Sri Lanka, you can find BSc Hons degrees awarded in colleges and universities. However, with regard to duration, you can receive a BSc Hons degree from countries such as England and Wales in three years. Then, when it comes to dissertations, it is a must for a student to write a dissertation, to qualify for BSc Hons degree. BSc Hons degree. There is a general opinion that a student can easily complete a BSc degree than a BSc Hons degree. This is due to the heavy syllabus in the latter and that the student has to undergo training at a higher level to complete BSc Hons degree. What is the difference between BSc and BSc Hons? The true difference between BSc and BSc Hons lies in the university or the country that offers the degree. This is said because you will see that some countries such as England offer the title BSc Hons even for a general science degree. Some countries do not. For example, in Australia to have the title BSc Hons you have to study for four to five years, depending on your study stream. • BSc stands for Bachelor of Science. BSc Hons stand for Bachelor of Science Honours. • A Bachelor’s degree BSc is generally considered an ordinary pass degree and BSc Hons is looked upon as an extraordinary degree. • BSc Hons is supposed to have a heavier syllabus than BSc. • Some countries offer the title Hons for a general BSc that lasts for only three years. However, in some countries such as Scotland, to be eligible for a degree that has the title BSc Hons, you should study for four years. • A regular BSc degree takes three to four years for the candidate to complete whereas it takes four to five years to complete BSc Hons. This is one of the main differences between the two courses. • The time period meant for the completion of both the courses is almost the same but it differs in the case of a few countries. For example, in countries such as England and Wales, you can have a BSc Hons degree within three years. That will be a BSc general degree. • Submission of a dissertation is not compulsory for a BSc degree. Dissertation depends on whether the degree is general or special. For BSc Hons, you definitely have to submit a dissertation. These are the valid differences between BSc and BSc Hons. amaben2020: 1 Like 1 Share |
