It’s the 32nd edition of the African cup of nations and what started 62 years ago in Sudan with Egypt taking the title would reach a historic mark in this edition. It’s the first time the tournament is being played in the summer. In November 2018, CAf stripped Cameroon of the hosting right because they were not satisfied with their level of preparedness, the Boko Haram insurgency and the Anglophone crisis. The bid for the new hosts was majorly between South Africa and Egypt, with the later emerging victorious with 16 votes to 1 in the CAF executive Committee.

The game is slated to start on Friday 21st June and end on 15th July. 24 teams would participate in the tournament with each of them placed into six groups. The first two teams from each group would qualify while four best losers across the six groups would join them in the round of 16.

The two losers from the semi-final stage would compete for the 3rd place finish. Individual awards such as the most valuable player, best goalkeeper, best goal, top scorer e.t.c would be given at the end of the tournament. Its also good to note that this would be the First AFCON expanded from 16 to 24 teams. There are three Debutants in this year’s edition. Mauritania, Madagascar and Burundi, would be making their first appearance in the competition, after a long wait.

The VAR would be used from the Quarter Finals of the tournament after being agreed on by EFA. The question on its reliability still remains after the disappointing experience in The second leg of the CAF champions league finals where Wydad Casablanca walked out on the game cause the VAR wasn’t working to help the referee make a crucial decision in the game. Nevertheless The go ahead has been given and it would be used.

Six stadiums across 3 cities would be used for the tournament. In Cairo, Cairo International Stadium, 30 June Stadium and the Al Salam Stadium. Alexandria Stadium in Alexandria, Suez Stadium in Suez and finally Ismailia Stadium in Ismailia. The finals and the third placed match would hold at the Cairo International Stadium.

This 32nd edition looks promising with lots of excitement written over it. With a lot big names playing and big names missing, the question of who would emerge as the winner is certainly unknown.
