FG probes Nigeria @50 celebrations

The Federal Executive Council, on Wednesday, approved the setting up of a committee to probe observed lapses in the Nigeria’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

The probe is also expected to ensure that all monies spent on the celebrations were accounted for by the Nigeria @50 planning committee and others responsible for the implementation of the event.

The sum of N10bn was initially budgeted for the celebration but was eventually reduced to N6.6bn after public uproar.

Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, who briefed journalists after the meeting, in Abuja, said, “We intend to commend those that have done well and reprimand those that did not.”



“All monies spent will be accounted for by all those that monies were given to, to make for transparency and proper accountability.
“There were contributions from other ministers on the successes recorded, observed lapses and the way forward.

“A committee was put in place to examine the causes of the observed lapses with a view to correcting them in future events.”
The minister further explained that the probe would be concerned with mostly logistical lapses and not security shortcomings.

The membership of the committee was , however, not disclosed as Akunyili said the Secretary to the Government of the Federation would name the team in due course.
