The rains are here again in Nigeria. Being a country located in West Africa along the Atlantic Ocean's Gulf of Guinea, there are two main weather seasons:The Wet and The Dry.

A home is one of the most important investments that you can ever make, therefore the need to protect them with special care during this period. How do you protect your property against the floods and any other danger that may cause you to lose this important investment you have made? What precautionary measures should you put in place to keep your house safe?

1. Repair Your Roof- The roof of your house is one of the most important parts you should check being the most anterior part of the house. It first receives any impact from above. If you see any crack or leak, ensure it is fixed and don't overlook the minor faults.

2. Check Your Electrical Fittings- Leaked/leaking roofs with bad electrical fittings leaves the house unguarded in terms of electric shocks and even fire outbreak. Whenever it is raining, make sure to unplug all high-voltage appliances because of lightning strike. When leaving your home, ensure your appliances are turned off because you can not predict the weather these days.

3. Fix Broken Ceiling & Windows- Ensure that your windows are not broken during this season. If there are any leaks/cracks, ensure you seal and replace them. If it seems out of your wheelhouse, seek the services of a professional. You can also apply a fresh coat of paint to prevent mould.

4. Clean the Gutters: The cause of floods in most neighbourhoods in Nigeria is chocked gutters and culverts. It is imperativethat you clean the gutters to allow the water run in your drainage system. Cleaning the drainage will also prevent pools of water which cause breeding of mosquitoes. If there are any outgrown bushes around your home, clear them to prevent reptiles from invading your property.

5. Furniture and Flooring: if your furniture or floor is made of wood, make sure they are protected, especially this period. Rainwater on the furniture is likely to cause mould. Move furniture away from the windows to prevent the rainwater from damaging them.
