I believe there's an iota of truth to it because Mike has said to her face and other HMs according to the reports of that day, confirmed it as well. I don't think it's an everyday thing, but it happens occasionally. Mike saying it publicly is insensitive, though.

Lets be objective, Ike left Mercy to take the decison. He told Mercy he does not want to stand on sunday, that Mercy should do whatever she wants to do.
