Pamatips:

Justice Yusuf Birnin-Kudu of Jigawa State High Court sitting in Gumel, has sentenced a Deputy Director of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Auwal Jibrin, to six years in jail for unlawful enrichment and gratification.

He was convicted alongside one Garba Ismaila who bagged seven years in jail for benefiting from the $115.010m largesse of a former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in the run-up to the 2015 presidential election.

The two men were sentenced on Friday following their prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Kano zonal office.

Acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said the two convicts received N45m out of the N250m disbursed in Jigawa State to influence the outcome of the 2015 elections.

Jibrin and Ismaila had pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the six and seven counts against them respectively, thereby setting the stage for full trial during which the prosecution presented five witnesses and tendered 20 exhibits against them.

Delivering judgment, Justice Birnin-Kudu held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt “all the elements and facts of the case as contained in the charge and the testimonies of prosecution witnesses and exhibits tendered.”

He added that the defence team failed to counter the evidence presented by the prosecution through its witnesses.

The court thus found the first defendant guilty as charged on count two, while the second defendant was found guilty on counts one and three.

The court, however, discharged them on counts four, five and six.

The judge further ordered the final forfeiture of the recovered monies and property attached to the investigation with the exception of a three-bedroom flat attached at No. 1 Hadejia Road, Birnin Kudu , Jigawa State.

Thank God Naira Marley's soapy never had enough time to trend. Hopefully we'll even get enough time to have the right perspective about it: it's a stupid song from the most useless source possible! Zlatan Ibile is enough to satisfy our street song needs!

Auwal Jubril...you'll not see Hausas support this man or complain over witch-hunt but try it on someone from the south especially the East, they'll start playing the "islamization" card.

Well except he meant it in a way & wrote in in anoda way. I think me and most ppl here got the message he wrote!

I'm just offended when ppl are blind to hate hence spew rubbish at the little steps the nation is making in fighting corruption.
Ps dat 2nd statement wasn't calling out.
Non of my immediate family member has #45 million naira lying around & that is d bitter truth.
Infact 99.9% of Nigerians don't hv such amount lying around. So it wasn't much of a call out per say
Have a wonderful new month.

I actually think you didn't understand the perspective of the man that made the "maggi" comment.

He was making an illustration which I can paraphrase in another way thus: When a poor ordinary citizen steals something as trivial as cheap "maggi", picture of his/her face would be plastered in the dailies, whereas when these privileged elites steal a whole lot of money (millions), what they get is a mere slap in the hand - (fines/few years in jail). Also, their faces are not displayed when the news is reported, so that they could be shamed in the public.

I hope it's clearer to you now?

At the end of the day, this might be the only prosecution.

You see, here on Nairaland, a lot of people love the GEJ government. To them, it was the time of the South to be in charge, and the bigoted comments made by a Northerner in 2010(ironically a follower of you know who)...only strenghtened their resolve. The riots of 2011 where lots of Southerners suffered was another issue. Then the 'good economy' (fuelled by high oil prices) is the deal sealer.

Already there have been threats to blow up pipelines if Diezani is jailed. The fact that she is stealing from the people who are doing the threatening is very instructive.

And I'm sure that when the mess of this Buhari government ends in 2023...there won't be any prosecutions for any corruption. Because many Northerners would see it as an attack on the North (forget that he is stealing from them too).

Would things get better if we split.? NO....because the divisions would now be among bits of tribe.

The issue is, the money is in government because of our attempt at running a socialist economy which limits investment because government has to control prices for the poor ...which leads to bad services see the mess in our petrol and power sector for example..because prices are below production costs. So everybody wants to be close to power...because it attracts money. It's the only way to get money.

The only way out...government privatises everything, and allows prices to be set by the market...eventually investment flows in, and eventually government stops being where the money is at. Maybe then, corruption would move to the business world...where it can be easily isolated and dealt with.

But Nigerians prefer to be socialists....while being privately capitalist.Impossicant. You cannot serve two masters.

When will this holy efcc prosecute offenders favoring apc..

Though, I'm pro Buhari, but that doesn't make me blind to this government's justice by selection and favoritism. Apc should at least convict at least one of its erring members.

But hell No, everyone in apc are angels..

NObody should be above d law

Nice one. I hope this will apply to others who have stolen our money. While they are at it, also check those who are currently stealing money. Also, working on the unemployment rate in the country won't be a bad idea.

With time Nigerian citizens will realise that corruption is bad, stealing and embezzlement of government money is what brought Nigeria down. I pray that many of these thieves will be jailed.

People keep shouting, Buhari, Buhari. If we keep stealing and embezzling where will fund come from to implement our projects and run the government?
God bless you so much for this bitter truth ma.
