Richard Mofe Damijo Turns 58 Today

Richard Mofe-Damijo (popularly known as RMD, born 6 July 1961) is a Nigerian actor and former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State. In 2005 he won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 12th Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2016.

Mofe-Damijo was born in Aladja community of Udu Kingdom, near Warri, Delta State. He attended Midwest College, Warri and Anglican Grammar School and was a member of the Drama Club. He enrolled into the University of Benin to continue his education and studied Theatre Arts. In 1997 Mofe-Damijo returned to the university to study law at the University of Lagos and graduated in 2004.

After graduating from the university, Mofe-Damijo took part in a television soap opera in the late 80's called Ripples. Before then, he had a stint with Concord Newspapers and Metro Magazine as a reporter. Out of Bounds was the first film for which he received a writer/producer credit. In 2005 at the maiden edition of the African Movie Academy Awards Mofe-Damijo won the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Mofe-Damijo was the commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State, Nigeria.

Mofe-Damijo was married to Nigerian journalist/publisher, May Ellen-Ezekiel (MEE). After her death in 1996, Richard Mofe-Damijo married TV personality, Jumobi Adegbesan, who later left TV for the corporate world. Richard Mofe-Damijo has 4 children. 2 with his current wife and 2 from his previous marriage

The thing about getting older is that with each passing day you know yourself better, find your voice more and generally become better aware. It’s been 58, years of stumbles, falls, wrong turns, dreadful mistakes and errors but in all, they have been 58, remarkable years of God’s consistent grace and mercies. If after all these years I am afraid to speak the truth irrespective of whose ox is gored, then I have failed, which is why I have never been prouder of being Nigerian than I am now because Nigerians have given me the best birthday week, ever. It’s been a harvest of protests that have brought positive results. It indeed gives me hope that even though a lot of young people in this generation are misinformed, misguided and scaringly shallow, a lot more have their heads in the right places and I am optimistic that it can only get better, so as I reflect on my years, I pray that Proverbs chapter 31, verses 8 and 9 will guide the remaining years of my life, Amen! #RMDSaysSo #RMD@58 #GratefulHeart #HappyMan #FulfilledLife
