EXCELLENT ANALYTICAL SKILLS ( A GOOD MATHMATICIAN MAKES A BRIGHT ENGINEER FROM EXPERIENCE) , TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE OF ENGINEERING APPLICATION SOFTWARE RELEVANT TO UR FIELD, ABILITY TO CARRY OUT, IMPLEMENT AND SUPERVISE ENGINEERING DESIGNS in ACCORDANCE WITH RELEVANT DESIGN STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES, ACTIVE PARTICPATION IN ENGINEER'S FORUM (NSE, COREN ETC) . . . AND ABOVE ALL, CONSTANT RESEARCH TO ALWAYS UPDATE URSELF. . .

You will not become a "world-class engineer" in Nigeria. Sad but true.

In addition to having a degree, being a member of a professional body, reading journals etc, you need to work and get involved in really challenging projects. There is nothing like ''expert'' or ''world-class'' engineer if you don't get involved in the ''doing''.

Where do you live and which industry do you work in? I live in Nigeria and trust me in my industry, there are fewer expatriates than Nigerians and we are doing a lot of ''world-class'' stuff right here in Nigeria.

I personally get tons of offers from all over the world and I am not moved because I get a lot more playing time here being a Nigerian, playing in big projects - billions of Dollars Projects my brother. Have you heard of the Nigerian Content Developoment Law? My brother Nigeria has moved far beyond where you left her.

@poster, to tell you the gospel truth. To be a world class engineer, you must be full of ideas, make research, invent what no one has ever invented that is useful to the world and mingle yourself with other existing engineers because a single tree cannot make a forest.

less I forget , You have to be financially bouyant.

You can never be a world class Engineer in Nigeria!
I used to work in Multinational Oil Company but had to turn in the Paper to go work abroad for me to be an international player in my specialist field.

Most of the Concept Engineering , BOD, FEED are done abroad,  real engineering expertise  come to bear from Concept through BOD's, FEED.

My former company would not take advice from a bloody Nigeria Top Engineer without sending a mail for confimation to Houston, even if the Houston Guy's are wrong their judgement comes before yours, Most of my peers back then school at imperial, UCL,Herriot Watt, MIT, UponTyne, Cranfield and still yet no one takes our engineering judgement.

My Brother, if you are in for the money stay in 9ja but if you want to put your name on the world scale, you need to go work abroad with world class companies that are known for Patent stuffs!

I have to humbly disagree. Instead, re-invent the wheel. Find a problem that has already been solved, and re-solve it your own way. Wether succeed at this or not, you will gain unique insights. Keep doing this and an idea will drop in your lap when you aren't expecting it. "Experts" declared that the search engine business was dead and could not be improved upon. Google re-invented search and whopped Yahoo and Microsoft.

First you need to arm yourself with a good education. I think a good degree from a good school in Nigeria is the starting point. To get the right engineering exposure, you ideally need to do well (first class or 2:1), in a good discipline. You need that to open the doors, and trust me, you'll be under a lot less pressure.

Secondly, while you're in school, don't do same of the same. Get yourself clued on to the practical aspects of what you're studying.
I was coasting along till I met a veteran electrical engineer during my IT, and he asked me 'why have you never gone to Oshodi, get a few ICs, couple them together, and see what will happen?' He taught me how to not just stick to Theraja, but to look for materials that would give me the practical edge.
I once found a very good electronics design workbook in use by a roast plantain seller shocked I promptly bought the book off her. Result: I practically designed projects for virtually everybody in my final year class. My project won a school prize.

Thirdly, you must have a clear vision of what you want to do in/with your career. I was very clear about wanting to work in the hi-tech industry, even though it wasn't what it is today, back when I was in school. My interests in school, as well as my IT experience were geared towards that. It wasn't a walk in the park by any means, but eventually I got what I wanted. Most people are never sure what they want to do, or they just want anything. This has its advantages and disadvantages. Eventually, when the hi-tech industry did take off in Nigeria, I was one of the beneficiaries, because I was already looking in that direction.

All told, I think you can be a world-class engineer even in Nigeria. In my industry in Nigeria, we have lots of exposure within a short while, and Nigeria I am proud to say is exporting home grown talent all over the world already, myself being no exception. Things may be slow in a particular sector, in which case one might need to seek opportunities in other countries, but the notion that you can only be world-class in Europe and the US is wrong.

To be a world class Engineer, you need to study, be abreast of current trends, network preofessionally through professional association, manouvre yourself to learn and work with the best in your area of expertise and have international exposure in your education and work experience! So you have to move around a bit!

1. You do not need software appreciation to be world class. Engineering was invented practically without any software; it was invented and developed through the simple application of Math, Physics and Technical Drawing. All these (as well as world class engineers) existed before the advent of software.
2. The government in conjunction with COREN and NSE should be more supportive of and responsible for trainee engineers. Go to any NYSC camp or secretariat and they will tell you that doctors and pharmacists should serve only in hospitals while engineers - and everyone else - should teach. What world class engineer can you get from that kind of system?
3. Prospective engineering students should be specifically tested for proficiency in the numerate sciences. I don't see how you can be a good engineer if you hate Math and we have quite a number of such engineers.

Until these issues are addressed Nigerian engineers will continue to have a hard time proving themselves professionally.

tinking like dis set some people back i.e. typical example -technical drawing is extinct do u knw y, cos a  software was developed  called Autocad, nobody in dis day and age draws on paper i.e TD board, setsquares etc. same applies to calculations knowing the right formula  to use is one thing, but simplifying/automating the calculation process through the use of a spreadsheet is another.
getting the basics things right is fundamental (which is where education comes into play)  afterall software is "garbage in garbage out"

shocked shocked shocked i suggest you look up on the definition of engineering.

i tink d key word is prospective, you cant b an engineer if you fail  pre-requisite courses and engineering mathematics is one of such courses.
