The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has warned pilgrims to this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia to resist any temptation to carry hard drugs to the holy land.

Speaking on the heels of the inaugural flight of intending pilgrims, Mrs Dabiri-Erewa reminded them that Saudi laws prescribe death penalty against such act.

In a statement by the NIDCOM Head of Media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the commission chairman said it was disheartening that some Nigerians still ran foul of Saudi Arabia authorities’ law, despite repeated warnings and workshops for intending pilgrims.

She recalled that some Nigerians caught with hard drugs in the last few years were still on death row in Saudi Arabia.

The NIDCOM chairman pleaded with pilgrims to shun the shameful act.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa also reminded the pilgrims that kolanuts and prescription painkillers in large quantities have been banned in Saudi Arabia.

The commission chairman warned that if found on anyone, the offence attracts severe penalties according to new Saudi Arabia regulations.

She said the Federal Government, through the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and various state boards, had made arrangements to attend to the medical needs of the pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.

These people just don't want Nigerians to spread their culture. How can you ban kolanut, one of the most symbolic aspect of our culture? When did kolanut become a narcotic or controlled substance? Same way they banned indomie and gala into America. I was lucky enough to travel to New York on a business trip, I took Arik. Upon exiting the airport, the airport agents had set up two big dustbins. They started asking us if we had gala or indomie we should say so. Everyone who were honest enough to tell the truth had their indomie and gala thrown away.

This is pure madness, we cannot export our food but they can bring in anything into nigeria without restrictions.

Why is the government using scarce public funds, to fund pilgrimage...it's absurd, Nigeria is not a rich country, according to statistics majority of Nigerians are poor, let's channel funds to these critical basic needs of Nigerians. There is no rationale behind Government funding of pilgrimage, Nigeria is a secular country, I think it's all political.

Is there some sort of award for painting ourselves as black as we can?

Of course no one is supporting nefarious acts, but couldn't the PR have centred on some other issues, like perhaps the benefits of the pilgrimage?

Why do some people find it difficult to publicly commend several Nigerians breaking records all over the world, but are quick to publicly warn fellow Nigerians like this?

If Nigeria gets some dubious rating tomorrow, some people will start pointing fingers

With friends like these, who needs enemies?
