If dey ban plastic, how do we get affordable drinking water, how many people have access to treated water piped to their homes here in Nigeria, what happens to dat jobless guy dat probably took loan from a microfinance bank, so he could start a a pure water business, it's a ripple effect, yes I agree dis polymers are quite dangerous, but maybe we sud first sensitize Nigerian on the safe use of these materials and also start up recycling plants.our government is really detached from d reality. It's a ripple effect, so u don't just wake up one morning and start passing laws.

store pure water and pet bottle drinks under room condition.
Do not boil ur food (moi moi) with nylon.
Keep all plastic away from children.

We do not have a good recycling policy. FG should go ahead and ban it but they should first provide an alternative such as biodegradable products. Last year, I worked with so e students in creating biodegradable plastics from cassava flour. Things like that should be encouraged. It is believed that in 15years, with the rate we are going, there is going to be more plastics than humans in the world.

National President, Polymer Institute of Nigeria, Prof. Paul Mamza, has appealed to the Federal Government to drop the proposal for the ban on plastic bags and materials in the country.

Polymer Institute of Nigeria is an umbrella for all Polymer scientists, engineers, technologists and industrialist in Nigeria.

Recently, an environmental law prohibiting the use and manufacture of plastic bags in Nigeria passed through First Reading in the House of Representatives.

Regardless, Professor Mamza told newsmen that instead of banning plastic materials, Nigeria should be integrated into the technological world where Plastic wastes are used as a veritable recovery rather than the ban.

He said: “Recently, the House of Representatives passed an Environmental law prohibiting the use and manufacture of plastic bags in Nigeria through first reading, but, I want to say that there is no alternative to plastics yet.

“Plastics have replaced traditional materials, due to its higher technical advantage and low cost. Most superior materials that run automobiles, household items and initially, all materials in commercial uses, are made from plastics.

“In some countries like Singapore, polymeric wastes were utilised in the generation of electricity.

“The Government of Nigeria, rather than ban the use of plastic bags, should engage polymer professionals in finding ways of environmentally friendly disposal of plastics by novelty of waste to wealth.

“Nigeria must be integrated into the technological world where plastic wastes are used as veritable recovery rather than simple ban.

“Modern technologies also offer viabilities of biodegradable and photodegradable polymers. The built–in disposability of plastics, through the use of microorganisms or photosensitive groupings, are areas of current research and development that Nigeria should key into, not outright ban on plastic bags.

“All levels of government in Nigeria should invest in science and technology, especially polymer science and technology, which is a springboard for economic prosperity.”

Nylon, the foamy take-away pack, pure water sachet should be banned. But before then, government should provide an alternative.

Well said sir but I think if the local industries and our universities are encouraged to look into the prospects of material science, the proposal of banning is doable. Countries in Nigeria's Cline have banned it. We can too. I worked with some students last year to develop biodegradable plastics from cassava flour. The result was amazing

I commend you on your research. biodegradable plastics is d way to go, but these things take time, infact years, so many researches have been conducted in our universities, but are not easily transferred to production companies. So my take is this, let's make what we have work first, den gradually evolve to biodegradable materials.

Hmm, but I think we can borrow ideas that work from others. We can use biodegradable water pods instead of using plastics for water and other drinks. We can use arboform for other materials. I saw a guy from India design edible spoons from wheat. We can borrow these ideas if we can't develop ours yet.
I learnt Jaiz bank at a time encouraged people to open an account and fund it with used plastic bottles. That is a way to go. Things can work in Nigeria if we put our mind to it.

Its just a proposed ban passed in the lower chamber before going to upper chamber and to presidential panel which will consist of environmental specialists, ministry of science and technology and other relevant agencies before presidential ascent.
Why Nigerian youths lack basic knowledge of how government runs. That why we don't even know who to fight and who to hold responsible.
We fight the wrong people and allow the culprits to go free.
The proposed ban hearing started and still in house of representative but Nigerian educated illiterate lazy youths have started insulting the president calling him names...

There are countries making bags out of processed cassava; something we have in abundance. Even Adidas has started making biodegradable running shoes cos they care about their environment. Why can’t we imitate that technology since that’s what we’re good at? You see nylon/plastic bags littering the whole place without any hope of them being recycled.

Nylon causes more harm than good to the environment generally.

Create another one before u ban it. This is source of income of many Nigerians..

That's the voice of a climate demon.

A climate demon is someone that sees all the signs and symptoms of a looming climate crisis and STILL insists on believing that it doesn't exist.

Millions of tonnes of plastic is in OUR water bodies already.

Everyone drinks or eats a debit card size of microplastic every week.FACTS.

Even if you dont care about the marine animals dying from eating plastic or being entangled by it,don't you care about what is entering your body? What sort of future are we living for our kids?Probably no future at all?

All because of Money??

And more money

The saddest part is that it's the poorest people that will be most affected by climate change.

God Bless you sir.
People need to know that plastics causes more harms that good. Why can't we switch to recycled paper bags.
Everyone should go to his/her trash bins, you would see that 60 to 80% of your trash is plastics and 20% of goes back to your drainage or the sea.
It's a good move by the FG and I'm 100% in support .
