Nigerians and inferiority complex. Queen's English is a unique variant of English language spoken only in South east England: not all parts of England speak queen's English. Therefore, it is not possible to speak queen's English when you are not raised in South east England, this is even more difficult and inconceivable for a Nigerian who has not lived in the UK. The best you can do is to painfully twist your tongue, and produce what is called Nasalised Babble, in a gratuitous and futile bid to speak "queen's" English. If you want to have first-hand experience of nasalised babble just visit our airports, or listen to our radio presenters and Djs. |

mrblessed: Wetin sir, can't we just learn to pronounce words correctly without throwing inferiority into it? The language is for the Queen, right? I think its fine to do right by her...after all, we all appreciate when others learn to speak our language correctly. Correct pronunciation is not ascent. 3 Likes |

This post is not to sell the British accent/method of speaking English over the Nigerian one, rather for those who seek to modify their speaking for personal, career, travel or business reasons. Everyone should do what makes them feel most comfortable, and speak how best they feel most expressive; pidgin English or posh, whatever rocks your boat. But in truth, whatever language worth learning is worth learning well. |
