Over the years, the Nigerian music industry has been a force to reckon with in the whole of Africa as a continent and also getting applauds and recognitions from other major parts of the world. But we should ask ourselves, is the Nigerian music of today better than that of the past?

Nigerian musicians of in our day get been criticised severally for producing new of the beat little their poetic inside is taint and not lovely enough.

A school of thought believes that Nigeria has seen the best of music, good lyrical contents spiced with ecstatic beat in the past and thus condemn today's music as nothing but mere sounds to dance to.

Looking at it, apart from Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and King Sunny Ade who put Nigerian music on the map in the past, the new generation guys too are doing well.

Most recently, five Nigerian artistes featured in the Lion King album with Beyonce amongst other recent global achievements.

In the past, Nigerian music used to be known for juju, apala, highlife, Fuji, amongst others, while today we mainly partronize afro beat, afro pop, reggae, rap, hip hop, gospel, RnB amongst others.

These new generation artistes most especially, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Burnaboy, Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi amongst others have done enough in their own way to push the Nigerian oriented afro pop right out to the world.

It can also be noted that most of these new school artiste guys sample some of the songs from the past and bring them into their songs. Recently there have also been a fight among fans to know who exactly is taken after Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

If it was Burna Boy who has done a lot of Afro-fusion songs in line with Baba Fela or Falz who just released an album called "Moral Instruction", throwing shades at the government, corruption and bad leader, just like Fela did.

In Africa, Nigeria has become the go to country when it comes to music. We always come top with the way we do music. One can safely say that this rise in the Nigerian music success rate is not just as a result of what our new school artistes are doing now, but our legends have also played a huge part.

We can all agree that both the old and new musicians have kept pushing Nigeria to the world. Although done differently, nothing really has changed when it comes to putting the name on the map.
