BEKWARRA: The voice that need to be heard
By U. S. Ashiwere
Bekwarra language is the language of the people and the name of the ethnic group. Bekwarra is the most dominant ethnic group in Cross River State and the other major languages spoken in the state include; Efik which is spoken in Cross River South, Ejagham which is spoken in Cross River Central and Bekwarra in Cross River North. The language is becoming very dynamic and dominant as it is being universally spoken and heard by many nations in Nigeria. The language has developed into written form and is taught in primary and secondary schools in the state, churches that is, the bible has been translated into the Bekwarra language and is used by the Roman Catholic Church and indigenous churches in the area. Also, the language is also spoken in many other institutions where their people gathered to impact knowledge. The language is used for news translation in Cross River Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC), Cross River Television Authority, Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in Calabar, Ikom, Ogoja stations. This made his Royal Highness of Ikaa-Ichia chief Edward Odey Abua (Aka Odabua) in his book: The Grand work of the culture and history of Bekwarra. He said, Bekwarra needs to be heard publicly despite they are minority in Nigeria.
The Bekwarra people are pre-dominantly Christians and are majorly Catholic while few attend their indigenous churches like; Rapture power Outreached ministry, Soldiers of Christ, Holiness and power church, etc while others are pagans and few who are still devoted to their African Traditional Religion (ATR). They have several government hospitals cutting across all the wards in the area, it also has both government and private schools like Rochris, Unique, cornerstone,Paradise,Model college,High tower Polytechnic,Owoiche school of health etc, hotels etc. it also has other social amenities like pipe borne water, electricity, both trunk A, B, and C roads, street lights etc..
