Buhari: Islam’s greatest challenge is violent extremism

President Muhammadu Buhari says the greatest challenge to Islam is violent extremism.

The president, who said this in his Eid-El-Kabir message, regretted that activities of religious extremists were negatively affecting the image of Islam.

He challenged Muslims to distance themselves from those preaching violence in the society, emphasisng on the importance of putting the virtues of the religion into practice and making justice and righteousness their guiding principles.

“We should be the mirror through which others see the virtues of our faith. Islam is a religion of peace and we should avoid violent extremist ideas that give Islam a wrong name because our conducts will leave more lasting positive impressions than what we say by word of mouth,” he said in a statement issued by Garba Shehu, his senior special assistant on media and publicity.

“Violent extremism is the greatest challenge facing Islam today and the only way we can neutralise its evil influence is to distance ourselves from the activities and teachings of those who preach indiscriminate violence against innocent people.

“This flies in the face of the teachings of Islam.”

He advised parents to protect their children from the deadly exposure to violent extremists who, he said, manipulated and exploited children for their own evil agenda.

“Boko Haram became a deadly force and major security scourge because Muslim societies were indifferent from the beginning to the activities of extremist preachers, who manipulate their innocent and gullible followers,” he said.

“Extremism is like cancer which must be detected and destroyed from its early stages of growth.”

He, however, assured Nigerians that Boko Haram insurgency, kidnapping and other forms of banditry would be dealt with “uncompromisingly until we see the back of these evils plaguing our country”.

Buhari is right. Violent extremism have made Islam very unattractive to non muslims.

Muslims in Indonesia , Malaysia, Iran and South West Nigeria etc are highly educated

And the religion is blessed with extremists like Mr.President.Meanwhile Mr.President is lying as usual because the religion of the headslammers is deeply rooted in fanatism/extremism.

You are wrong, education is of various forms, No matter how educated you are, you can still be an extremist,
El Rufai once said if we don't give our youths the right education someone will give them the wrong one, what Islam in Nigeria needs is tolerance of other people's opinion.

We have Muslim doctors, scientists and finacers in terrorism circles, is that also a lack of education

Buhari is only leaving the fire and going after the smoke by such utterances.

What birthed violent extremism in the first place?

Muslims have proven incapable of telling themselves the truth. The Religion has been hijacked by politicians and their urge to present one unified doctrine has meant the bigger sect wins the battle of ideology or is bound to swallow up smaller ones.

Educate the illiterate among your followers why it is wrong to use public money contributed by both muslims and nonmuslims to buy salah ram or build mosques for them.

Also tell them God is a spirit and his messages are not literal but figurative and meant to communicate dynamics of the spirit realm to us.
Teach them that all the matter in their body was once in the dust or soil and will soon return to the soil but their soul(intellect, emotion, mind) and spirit goes back for judgement..

Tell them that certain medical equipment hardly fails where only muslims reside and patronise but they fail randomly where Christians are, and that is a pointer that those that deligently seek Christ will find him.

Teach them the truth that can help them be independent of Jazz and have peace. Teach them the truth Buhari.

They won't be regarded as terrorist, huh? Unlike when IPOB carries out a peaceful protest.

How much troops has he deployed to the north to curb or limite the level of violence exhibited by the fulani herdsmen but rather he said we should pray for them. Here he is preaching to them, if he preaches to every other tribe which exhibits some level of flaws like this, trust me Nigeria would be peaceful truly.

Hatred and illiteracy it is for me.

You have people who read a book about spiritual realm with carnal meaning around. I as a christian for example, i have seen several places where Israelites killed with the sword as commanded by God in the bible, but with some basic understanding like the saints or born again soul being the real Israelites, irrespective of race or country, and the sword representing the word of God or relevant words of the bible to situations, I don't need to be mislead into giving these scriptural verses physical meaning or going to slaughter humans.

When I pray and say something like: Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; Father torment all my tormentors according to 2 Thessalonians 1:6 That's the sword at work and not the way islamists interpret things carnally.

Illiteracy and hate can trigger such interpretation.

Is not just that sir, the inability of Islamic sects to tolerate one another is a major cause of concern. Christianity has several sects, but you don't see them hating, not to talk of mass killing one another.

Violent extremism is a calling for them, not a challenge.
