Can somebody please tell me why the devil was contending for the body of Moses?

Satan probably wanted a reason to take the spirit of Moses to kingdom of darkness or hell (with false accusations) but Arch Angel Michael stopped him without replying his offensive words?

I think the devil was looking at how Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to the rock and the devil probably thought that was a sufficient ground to steal his body which he could have erroneously termed as disobedient. May be God did not see it that way.

The angel understood the craftiness of Satan who was also an arch angel before and just rebuked him. You will recall that Satan brought three core temptations to JESUS Christ, first to misuse His power for self sufficiency instead of the church for which He fasted, second to exercise faith in a way that did not glorify God through erroneous application of God's word and three to project an illusion that was out rightly false, like if you do money rituals you will become stupendously rich like Bill Gates which is a lie and then just call the devil master and you will see it happen in your face.

The angel was smart to just shut the devil up by invoking the authority of God, and that brings in God's sovereignty into play meaning that the devil becomes powerless.
