the balcon d'or is older...
but didn't start recognising players outside Europe until the late 90's early 2000's.
Balon D'or used to be an award for Europeans only Given by a French Magazine...
However, since inception in 1991, the FIFA Best Awards has recognised players from all works and all continents, hence it IS the biggest and most official coming from the stables of FIFA

Exactly!! Modric won it last season. VVD just won it. You don't hear the name "Ballon d'or" that much because it's now more popularly known as UEFA Player of the year award. They are now the same thing.

When you hear people referring to the "Ballon d'or" post 2016, they are actually referring to the "FIFA Player of the year", which is wrong because Infantino has separated the two
