Chapter 1

Life is not a competition, it is an individual race to be run at the individual’s pace. Don't waste your time working hard to please others, live your life for the principles you hold dear irrespective of what others may say or think. Train children to be independent, morally upright and self-sufficient, this should be the emphasis, not the acquisition of worldly goods that will fade away and loosen their grip when we leave this world. Leave a legacy of respecting all men and doing good to as many people as you can. Let people remember you, not for the latest car you drive or number of houses you possess, but the impact you made in the community and to the lives of others who had need.

Try not to owe anything, but if you must owe let it be for genuine reasons that contribute towards self-improvement and for the welfare of others especially your own family. Always pay back when you owe otherwise when you are in dire need, there will be no help for you. Do not judge others when they make mistakes. We have all made mistakes in this life. On the contrary, provide good advice and encourage them onwards and never backwards.

Gossip is cowardice , for it says in private what it is scared to say in public and many a times is done out of grudge, envy or even hatred. Say what you want to say to a man’s face, let people know you for your forthrightness and honesty. If you have been hurt very badly by someone a number of times, withdraw yourself from that person’s orbit, you need to 'skim off' the toxic people in your life, and that includes partners who constantly abuse you either mentally or physically. Better to be single and in control of your life than be in a prison in the name of tradition. Forgive but do not forget, if you forget that sin may be committed again.

When hardship hits you, do not rush to worry. Clear your head, take deep breaths and look for solutions. Worry exacerbates an already bad situation and makes it even more difficult to make informed and logical decisions for problem resolution. Do not feel sorry for yourself because of your situation and do not compare yourself to any man or woman. Every situation is temporary and lasts only for a short period. One day you will look back and be thankful for how that situation made you a stronger person and equipped you with resilience and experience.

Do not be a partaker of the sins of others, when they lure you to evil, stay away for your own health and good name. As Solomon said, "A good name is better than fine perfume". People will always remember us for what we have done as opposed to what we possess. Do not be brash with your mouth or be in a haste to talk, stop, think and then talk if necessary. One word said in a hurry can destroy friendships and family relationships for ever. When the anger rises, breathe deeply and relax, then analyse your options for action. Always default to the option of creating peace.
