Ogun State Government has ordered parents and guardians of students in its public secondary schools/technical colleges to pay a compulsory donation of N3, 700 on resumption of the 2019/2020 academic session.

A circular dated August 27 and issued by the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Department of Secondary Education) said the donation had the approval of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The circular was signed by the Director of Education (Secondary) Akonsolu M.I., on behalf of the ministry’s permanent secretary, Igbere TV reports.

Governor Abiodun had on assumption of office declared a state of emergency in education, saying education in Ogun was in need of urgent intervention.

The new policy will now see parents/guardians, aside PTA levy of N600 payable on termly basis, also pay N500 as computer levy on termly basis; N500 as insurance, once per session; Sport/Jet/Literary will attract N300 on termly basis.

Also included is N1, 500 for school materials (caps, badge, beret etc.) and N300 for file jacket both for new intakes only.

The circular also directed principals to ensure that students dress according to the school dress code.

“You are also enjoined to adhere strictly with the content of this circular as the state government has zero tolerance to collection of unapproved fees in all public secondary schools/technical colleges,” it said.

Finally, some sanity.

Now these monies should be used to run the schools. The nonsense idea that schools should be completely free when government cannot adequately fund them is BS and needs to stop

You don't get it, do you?

On paper, Nigeria has one of the best policies and programmes in the world.

In practice, reverse is the case.

If govt at all levels give their programmes at least 60% commitment, Nigeria would have been thousands of miles ahead of where it is right now.

I can bet you, less than 30% of this N3,700 will get back to the students in value. Na today? cheesy

Relations & wives of the top shots in the state are already warming up to "supply berets, badges etc" right now.

This is okay.

You don't value what you don't pay for. And the fees are affordable. Hopefully there will be less truancy in the schools.

Ogun State public secondary education was never free in the real sense of it as against the Free Education the previous government would want us believe. Students pay all sundry of fees including WAEC fees.

The rot in primary and secondary education in the state is immense and it requires all hands on deck to make it work again and if it requires a little commitment from the parents /guardians, so be it.

The painful thing is just that these same people that enjoyed Free Education in the good days of old are the ones making it impossible for others to enjoy it now. Personally, I belief that if we set our priorities right and curb wastages, qualitative free and compulsory education is possible for pupils and students in primary and secondary schools.

The idea of paying school fees is not new or bad because I paid school fees too despite the fact I attended public schools although during military regime anyway

the only problem is will it affect the standard of education in positive way? Student paid schools fees in Oyo state under Isiaka Ajimobi administration but education system got worse under him than previous government when students paid nothing as school fees

let's see the outcome anyway

That's a great idea. N3500 is not much so I believe most parents can afford it. And I also hope the state government will use the money to improve the quality of education which is a legacy the West has always been known for.

But I sincerely hope northern states would not emulate such idea cos it'd backfire. If they do, most parents will withdraw their kids from school. Because even with the free education in most northern states, some parents are reluctant to allow their wards to go to school.

Good move
Some parents are not ready to do anything at all, ask them to buy note books for their children they will tell you education is free for all. The only thing they enjoy is producing kids like rats grin Kids in public primary schools are even the worst they don't go to school regularly.

The idea is not bad if the money realized is used for the maintenance and running of the school.......... but seeing how People are stealing up and down , it might go into one person pocket and its the sad reality .

Kogi Guber: Dino Melaye speaks on stepping down [VIDEO]—
.........

Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi West has reacted to report making the rounds of him stepping down ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, forthcoming primary election.

It was reported that five governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kogi State stepped down, ahead of the party’s forthcoming primary election.

The five aspirants from Kogi East were reported to have stepped down for the immediate past Governor of the state, Capt. Idris Wada (rtd).

The decision of the aspirants to step down was disclosed by the Vice-Chairman, Kogi East Elders Council (KEEC) and former Minister of State for Health, Arch. Gabriel Aduku, while addressing journalists in Lokoja, the state capital, on Tuesday.

According to Aduku, the decision to ‘prevail on the other aspirants to collapse their structure into Wada was in the overall interest of the party and the state.

However, Melaye in a video shared on his Twitter page, said he had not stepped down for anyone.

He said: “There is a rumor by evildoers that Dino Melaye stepped down. I cannot step down because I am winning this primaries.

“We are cruising into victory, Yahaya Bello must go, One love PDP.”

This is great... Some parents would not buy common notebooks for their children... Maybe if they are paying they would take it serious...

The question is; will the money realized be used for the development of the educational sector?

Or will it end up in some politician's pocket?

Only time will tell.
