Security Operatives Foil Attempted Arson At Onitsha Shoprite Mall by GisterBlogger: 4:54pm On Sep 04, 2019
There was palpable tension in Onitsha, Anambra State on Wednesday following alleged reprisal attack plot by angry youths on Shoprite Shopping Complex.

The Nation gathered that the irate youths had stormed the Shoprite facility and nearly gained access to the building but for immediate intervention of security operatives.

The irate youths had planned to register their displeasure against the xenophobic attacks of Nigerians in South Africa.

The video of the attacks, which went viral on the social media, had triggered the youths’ anger as they threatened to attack Shoprite and other South African owned business outfits in the commercial city.

The attention of the Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Anambra State Vigilante, AVS, were however drawn to the unusual movement of youths as they quickly cordoned off all the roads linking to the mall.

Consequently, authority of Shopping Complex, quickly directed staff to leave the mall to forestal any attack while residents and customers scampered for safety for fear of being caught in the crossfires.

When our correspondent visited the area, the ever busy shopping complex was a ghost of itself.

Human and vehicular movements were restricted by heavily armed and stern- looking Policemen.
Some of the youths were however sighted lurking around as they sought for the slightest opportunity to cause mayhem in the complex.

Efforts by reporters to take photographs of the closed shopping complex were rebuffed by the stern- looking security men who insisted no shots be taken.

There were however skeletal services at the two outlets of the MTN office in Awka, Anambra state capital.

Staff of the company were at the close of work on Tuesday instructed to operate from home following Monday xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

An officer, who spoke with The Nation on condition of anonymity, said: “We can’t toy with the safety of our staff and customers in view of the recent events in the Country.

“We’re working from home today as we monitor situation “

Did you see what Nigerians are capable of doing? We are so good at taking advantage of every situation. Too high survival instincts, greed, selfishness is in our gene.

Leave their country and make yours work!

Nawa o...

While I understand the grudge the youths have against south Africans and xenophobia, looting shoprite is not the way forward.

1. Shoprite has Nigerian workers and Nigerian suppliers who might suffer job losses, not to talk of investors/shareholders

2. Shoprite is a brand name, not the mall itself. There are several shops in a mall, owned by Nigerians. The looters would touch these too and cause huge losses to the owners, who are Nigerians. In the end,we are hurting no one but ourselves.

3. The rate of poverty and hunger in the land is stratospheric. The so-called youths are impregnated with hungry touts whose goal is to cart off food, clothes, electronics and other accessories, PURELY for their own gain. They don't care about anything but that. All they are seeing is an opportunity to reap where they didn't sow. These are the most dangerous sets of protesters in this scenario, because they are ready to kill.

I hope the police, army and whatever are guarding the malls at night too,otherwise.....ITS MUDAFVCKING LOOTING TIME

Lies from yoruba media.

Am at Onitsha now and i can confirm that nothing like this happened.

This news is just to justify the looting of some igbos shops by yoruba youths.

What south africans are doing now is what they always desire to do the igbos.

They didnt want to register any displeasure. Lagos youths taught them how to loot, so they want to do the same. Right now, I think the management of Shoprite has to change their name. Because any small thing killing of a Nigerian, even if it's not by a Nigerian, these lazy idiotic youths will want to declare a free-for-all for something they never worked for.

Those people attacking shoprite will still foolishly recharge their MTN lines and make calls with it and also subscribe to DSTV and GOTV today instead of breaking their Simcards and damaging their DSTV if really they want to boycott SA products....

South Africans are there attacking Nigerians and their businesses and we are here looting Nigeria owned businesses inside shoprite mall amd burning down MTN buildings where Nigerians are working.
Its still a Win Win Situation for South Africa
Una sure say we get sense at all?

Must we behave foolishly like South Africans
Can lack of proper education be the cause of all these in Africa
