Funeral Rites: Can This Be True?? by jaszplus12(m): 12:11pm On Sep 05, 2019
Please brethren in Igbo land especially from Oraifite help us understand this issue. A man married a Ghanaian woman and has 4 children: 2 boys and 2 girls. He's lived in Ghana all this while and started his business here also and owned a few properties until the business went down. He found his way to Lagos and tried to pick up the pieces...his wife stayed back in Ghana with 2 of the children.
This was their agreement.
Unfortunately the man fell ill and died in Lagos.
His burial is coming up in a few weeks time and the people are preparing to attend from Ghana. Now, we're informed that the wife is to pay a sum of #700,000 as part of the burial rites.
Please is this a common practice?
Please anyone with information on this practice can enlighten us further.
Cheers and have a great day.
Mods please push this to FP for wider counseling from the wise men.

It may not be 'burial rites' essentially, but the wife's contribution towards a successful burial. One thing you should consider is if the late man has brothers or relatives willing to shoulder the bill for the burial. If not, especially where such brothers or relatives think the late man wasnt helpful to his family in Nigeria it may be a bit difficult for the woman and the children as the relatives may look the other way. So it's based on what is on ground. The woman and the children cannot run away from the burial responsibilities even while they think of how they will survive after the burial.

There are two faces to a coin. The man must have "chop" alone when the going was great and smooth, so now that he is back, unfortunately, as a liability, he must also "die" alone.

Thank you for your answers above. Though I never met the man but those who know him say he was very generous to people around him.
