Ebonyi State Police Command yesterday disclosed that the 68-year-old mother-in-law of Senator Julius Ucha was abducted and not kidnapped. The clarification came on the heels of speculations making rounds that the woman (Mrs. Maria Nwinya) was kidnapped and that her kidnap was politically motivated.

But Deputy Commissioner of Police, Yahaya Ardo in a telephone interview yesterday, stated that the gunmen invaded Nwinya’s home and whisked her away on Sunday night and that the police had neither established contact nor any demand on the family.

“So for now, we cannot say it is kidnap because if it is kidnap they would have demanded for ransom but up till now they have not done so. The correct thing to say is that she was abducted,” he said.

He, however, said police were on top of the situation and admitted that the command had made substantial progress in their investigations.

Daily Sun further gathered that the woman was kidnapped in her compound in Umuhali, Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State at about 8pm, while saying her night prayers.

According to source, the woman was dressing up at the time of her kidnap and as at the time of this report, contact was yet to be made.

The son-in-law, Senator Ucha said no contact had been established with the kidnappers or abductors but assured that everything possible was being done to secure the release of his mother in-law.

However, Daily Sun could not establish whether the abduction was politically motivated but those who spoke to our correspondent were of the opinion that politics could not be ruled out.

Those who spoke on the condition of anonymity were of the view that the kidnappers were not after money because if they were really kidnappers, they would have gone straight to name their ransom but till now, they have not contacted the family.
