SANWO-OLU’S 100 DAYS IN OFICE, LAGOS, NGO begin free surgery for 150 patients

The Lagos State Government in collaboration with the Benjamin Olowojebutu Foundation (BOF) will begin free surgical intervention for 150 patients with various health conditions such as hernia, lipoma, breast lump and fibroid on September 16, 2019.
The surgical intervention is an offshoot of the medical consultation and screening carried out by Lagos State Government and the foundation recently, with no fewer than 1,037 people receiving free treatment.
Speaking at a news conference over the weekend, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi noted that the free surgical intervention, which is part of activities to commemorate Governor Sanwo-Olu’s 100 days in office, is geared towards improving indigent residents’ access to healthcare.
“This surgical intervention tagged 100 in 100 is in fulfilment of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s promise to provide equitable and sustainable health care to Lagosians, especially the vulnerable in the society,” he said.
“This project is thus targeted towards bringing qualitative health care service to the doorsteps of vulnerable people in the society; it also clearly indicates that the present administration’s all-inclusive system of governance gives room for public-private sector partnership and collaboration”, Abayomi affirmed.
While noting that the government is very mindful of the fact that many Lagosians cannot fund their health services, the Commissioner stated that the Lagos Health Scheme (LSHS) has been initiated to increase access to quality health services and help achieve universal health coverage.
“The Governor is mindful that many Lagosians cannot fund their health care services, and it is, for this reason, we developed the Lagos Health Insurance Scheme whose primary function is to deliver a spectrum of health services to the underprivileged. Amongst the health services under the scheme will be care of the mother, developing foetus, immunisation for children, medical surgery procedures and other services that our population requires”, he said.

He commended BOF for initiating the intervention, noting that the State government is always willing and ready to collaborate and support well-meaning foundations, organisations and individuals whose mission aligns with that of the present administration.
“The support you are giving us is in line with the mandate we have in driving the universal health coverage and from our encounter with your foundation, your focus is on surgery. The process of carrying out such procedure is phenomenal,” he said.

While sharing his experience from the weeklong screening programme, the founder, BOF, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu said the aim of the foundation was to help the poor who could not afford the fund for qualitative healthcare.
He noted that no fewer than 1,037 people have so far benefited from the weeklong free medical consultation, screening and basic medical procedures comprising blood pressure and blood sugar checks, dental screening and treatment, health education and cervical cancer screening.
“In the past four days we have screened no fewer 1,037 patients, comprising 205 fibroid cases, 97 hernia cases, 35 Lipoma cases, 24 breast lumps, 100 cervical screening and 278 dental checkups including 139 scaling and polishing and 63 tooth extractions”, Olowojebutu said.

He revealed that the collaboration with Lagos State government is borne out the conviction that the present administration is passionate about the health and wellbeing of residents.
