Osun woman refuses free surgery to remove her Goiter; asks for N300,000 instead

Mrs Folakemi from Ede local government in Osun state, has been suffering from goiter for a while. She sought medical help but when a team of doctors offered her free medical services, she opted out and asked for the money raised on her behalf.

The NGO tried to change her mind but she insisted on walking away with the N300,000 contribution. She was given the money afterwhich she went back to her village.

A Nigerian woman identified as Mrs Folakemi, has reportedly turned down an offer for her goiter to be removed through surgery.

It was gathered that she has been suffering from goiter for a while and a Non-governmental organisation was able to raise N300,000.

Can we say it is hunger? Can we say it is poverty? Can we say it is fear? Can we say it is mental enslavement?

Certainly it was a VERY BIG opportunity lost to her. Nowadays it should cost between 500k and 1 million to have the operation done. The NGO did very well with the cost. The follow up drugs and rules certainly are to be preferred than the embarrassment of looking like a witch to children. Such an opportunity may not be found again.

Again mentally she may have been confused by herbal medicine vendors, who tell people with such condition that they have the cure. Probably she thinks that at the best she needs to give the herbal medicine vendor 20k at the most and use the balance for something “more reasonable”.

Unfortunately poverty has eaten deeply into people and their thinking has been bastardized by the intense misery, suffering and hardship in the land.
