Police Recover Rocket Launchers, Others From Robbery Suspects by SAKUR: 2:19am On Oct 29, 2010
The Police in Ogun State Command have recovered two rocket launchers, one General Purpose Machine Gun and 1, 070 rounds of unexpended ammunition from the armed robbery gang that invaded a bank in Ijebu-Ode on Tuesday.



Two of the robbery suspects and two passers-by died during exchange of gunfire between members of the gang and the police.



The command’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Daura, at a news conference in Abeokuta on Thursday, said other items recovered from the gang were three Ak 47 rifles; 332AK 47 empty shells; 156 rounds of GPMG ammunitions; 113 life cartridges; 10 launchers heads, 61 empty AK 47 magazine; 62 loaded AK 47 magazines and two sledge hammers among others.



Daura said, “Sporadic gunshots were heard about 950 hours and teams of policemen from divisions under Ijebu-Ode Area Command led by the Area Commander and an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ayo Akinsanya, were mobilised to engage the robbers operating on Ibadan Road in Ijebu-Ode.



“While the fierce gun duel was on, reinforcement came from the mobile men attached to the Armoured Personnel Carrier positioned in Ijebu-Ode and vigilance groups. The robbers were tackled and the robbery foiled with two armed robbers shot dead on the spot.”



He said six different vehicles and one motorcycles were also recovered from the gang.



The CP said vehicles were a white Toyota Hummer Bus with registration number XS 967 GGE, white Hiace bus with registration number XZ634 AAA; and Volkswagen Opel Astra with registration number FV 57 LND



Daura said other vehicles recovered from the suspects were a Nissan Primera car with registration number ES 79 LSR; Nissan Sharan with registration number BZ 242 AGL; Toyota Camry with registration number 887 KJA and Bajaj motorcycle with registration number QJ 649 SMK.



However, he did not disclose the number of arrested suspects.
