Water, as we all know is one of the basic source of human survival here on earth. Wherever they are, people need water to survive. Not only does the human body contains 60 percent water, the resource is also essential for producing food, clothing, and computers, moving our waste stream, and keeping us and the environment healthy.
According to research, nearly 70 percent of the world is covered by water, and only 2.5 percent of it is fresh. The rest is saline and ocean-based. Even then, just 1 percent of our freshwater is easily accessible, with much of it trapped in glaciers and snowfields. In essence, only 0.007 percent of the planet's water is available to fuel and feed its 6.8 billion people.

WATER CONTAMINATION AND WATER POLLUTION
Water pollution is a major contributor to declining health and well-being of animals, plants, ecosystems, and even human beings in Nigeria and the rest of the world.
People use water irrespective of the source. Unfortunately, most of the water around us are either polluted or contaminated. There are numerous ways in which water can get contaminated and polluted. Humans are one of the main pionniers of water pollution. They do this directly and indirectly.
Some directly infused human activities that pollutes and contaminate both groundwater and surface water includes; Dumping, Industrial Runoff, Agricultural Runoff, Landfills, Plastics. Direct causes of water pollution are those causes that change the quality of water almost immediately.

Dumping is probably the most common cause of direct water pollution from humans. Whether you dump your waste in the wrong places on purpose or accidentally, you're contributing to the pollution of surface and groundwater.
In areas where factories are present, these factories are often located near sources of water. These factories diapose their chemical waste into the rivers and streams and polluting them. Also, to note, in these areas acid rain may be present due to the presence of nuclear and power plants that releases toxic gases into the atmosphere.
Plastics continue to be a huge problem both in land fills and around our homes.
Allowing Plastics to sit for a long period of time can expose it to rainfall and chemicals from the plastic leach into the nearby groundwater.

The indirect pollution of water go through a few changes before affecting the quality of the water. They are less noticeable and hence mightnot be recognised as problems until they become very disturbing.
Most of the indirect pollution of water includes; Domestic sewage systems, Fossil fuels, Septic system, and Minning amongst others.
Domestic sewage and Septic systems, although designed to properly dispose human waste, are open to accidents and leakage. When these happens the contaminate the groundwater in the nearby area causing serious disease and illness.
When the Septic systems are not properly installed and kept on a regular maintenance, they can quickly and easily contaminate water with deadly bacterial diseases like dysentery and hepatitis which is harmful to thise who drink it. They can also cause death of plants and animals in the area putting the whole ecosystem off-balance.

In the case of fossil fuels, when burned, releases toxic gases into the atmosphere which can travel to waters supplies around the area. With time this results to surface water contamination and even acid rain which is hamful to the skin.

People who consume untreated water are open to dangerous diseases and illness. Especially people living in rural communities. Also, people living in urban areas are not left out from the dangers of polluted water as there are cases where water suppling industries might not properly treat their water before distribution.
In fact the urban cities are more exposed to water pollution and contamination as there are numerous activities that pollutes the ground and surface water.

How water pollution can be minimised and properly maintained will be discussed in the next article.
