Satan is a fallen angel--a real spirit being. Some of the biblical names and titles of Satan are:
Satan, which means, "Adversary."
Devil, "Accuser," "Slanderer."
Dragon, "Serpent," "Sea Monster." (The Greek root word means "to see".)
Serpent, emphasizing his crookedness and deceitfulness.
Beelzebub or Beelzebul, fm Syriac, "Lord of Dung," or "Lord of the House."
Belial or Beliar, "Worthlessness" with the connotation of extreme wickedness and destruction.
Lucifer, "Light-Bearer," meaning the morning star of Venus (the Planet).
The Evil One.
The Tempter.
The God of This World.
The Prince of the Power of the Air.
The Ruler of This World (Thiessen, rev. ed., pp. 142-143).
Satan's strategy is threefold: (1) Inspect, (2) Influence, and (3) Invade. We cannot control his inspection, but we can stop him from influencing us or invading us.

Jesus said,
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me (John 14:30).
Satan had inspected Jesus and found no sin with which to accuse him.

Job's story was a little different:

A demon is a fallen angel, that is, a spiritual entity created by God, that is part of an army of fallen angels under the rebellious leadership of a single dictatorial figure that the Bible calls Satan. The brother of our Lord, Jude, wrote,
“And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day” (Jude verse 6).
Satan is not omnipotent, not omniscient, and does not possess any of the divine attributes of God. Satan was created in perfection (Ezekiel 28:12-13). Indeed, this one called Diablos rebelled out of its self-delight in its beauty and power (Exodus 28).5 This once-God-worshipping being not only rebelled against God but was cast from heaven to await final destruction. The devil is, as Luther taught, like a mad dog on a leash. God allows him so much rope (though God by His nature is altogether good, altogether pure, altogether holy, and can never be either the author of sin or the culpable agent for evil). This “serpent,” (Gen. 3), this masquerading “angel of light” (2 Cor. 11:14), this “dragon” (Rev. 12), a metamorphosing and foul spirit of Hell, is awaiting destruction. The creature, an adversary of Jesus and His People, is active and goes about like a roaring lion to devour whom He may (1 Peter 5:cool. Satan is the iniquitous tempter of the saints and the perpetual enemy of believers. Indeed, the devil loves death, speaks nothing but lies, and spreads discord (John 8:44).

Satan sought to kill God by filling the hearts of spiritually susceptible men with the very poison that caused his assignment to Hell and destruction: self-centered pride. This gruesome being was the dark energy behind the uncommon alliance of both Gentile Romans and Jewish rabbinical leadership.

How do demons gain access into our lives?
Due to the scope of this teaching, I'm not going to list all the ways that a person can have a demon, but I would like to show you how a believer is quite capable of acquiring a demon through defilement.
In Colossians 2:13-15, we learn that by the forgiveness of sins, the demonic spirits are disarmed (spoiled) and their legal grounds are removed:

"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it."
As believers, we have a spiritual hedge of protection around us, but in Ecclesiastes 10:8, it becomes evident that we can break a hole in our hedge and be bitten by the enemy:

"He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him."
There are several good reasons to believe that this is speaking of spiritual serpents and not physical. The first part of this verse, speaking of falling into a pit, is also mentioned in Proverbs 26:27 which has a clear spiritual and not physical context. Psalms 7:15 also speaks of digging a pit, with a very obvious spiritual context. In verse 9 in Ecclesiastes 10, it is telling us that if you remove stones (which form a wall of protection) you will be hurt, which is physically untrue 99.99% of the time. Verse 11 tells us that the serpent will bite without enchantment, which is also true 99.99% of the time. The Bible is not a gardening or home improvement book and if it were speaking of physical snakes, then it would be basically telling us never to take down hedges because we will be bitten. That would be absolutely ridiculous.
Paul warned the believers in Ephesians 4:26-27 not to commit sin and therefore give place to the devil:

"Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil."
Furthermore, 2 Corinthians 2:10-11 tells us that through unforgiveness, Satan can get an advantage of us:

"To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices."
In Matthew 18:23-35, we are also warned that we can be turned over to the tormenters (which are evil spirits) if we are bitter and unforgiving:
"Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses."
Hebrews 12:15 also warns us not to allow bitterness to take hold in our hearts, lest we become defiled:

"Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled."
In the book of Hebrews, Paul was writing to the church, which is the body of believers. Therefore it becomes clear that believers are not immune from the ability to defile ourselves. Defilement is where a hole is punched into our spiritual hedge of protection, and legal grounds become available for demonic spirits in our lives.
1 John 5:18, "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not."
Many people misinterpret this verse to say that a Christian cannot have a demonic spirit. The first part of this verse is telling us that a believer won't continue in his old sinful lifestyle. The second part is not saying that Jesus will protect us, but is rather saying that we who are born (begotten) of God will keep ourselves. This word begotten here translates to the NT Greek word gennao, which means to be born of. As John 3:5 tells us, Christians are born of God:
"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
The word begotten found in John 3:16 does not have the same meaning as the begotten used in 1 John 5:18. In John 3:16, the word is translated back to the NT Greek word monogenes, and refers to a unique, an only. Jesus is the only begotten (unique) son of God. Whereas the begotten in 1 John 5:18 is referring to those who are born of God, and those who are born again are born of the Spirit of God. Furthermore, if you look carefully at the wording in 1 John 5:18, it is telling us that he who is begotten keepeth himself. This makes sense for us to keep ourselves, but it makes no sense for Jesus to keep Himself, especially in the context of this verse.
What 1 John 5:18 is telling us is that if we do not continue in our old sinful ways, and keep ourselves, the enemy will not be able to have any new legal grounds into our lives. In other words, we won't be picking up any new demons. However, what if we don't keep ourselves? What if we go out and do whatever we want? If we cannot hold up to the first two parts of this verse, then we cannot expect the blessing of the last part either.

"19I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
20However, do not rejoice that the spirits (i.e. demons/fallen angels) submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

It is OK to want to know about demonic forces, to some degree understand the modus operandi of Satan and the demons, his fallen angels etcetera but it should never be to the point of being obsessed on them. So long as OP is objective, so long as OP continues to state facts and not old wives tales, so long as OP is not going to attribute demons to be behind every headache, sneeze or computer mishap people have, so long as OP isnt going to start be talking of marine wife or marine husband, then OP has the red carpeted floor to show believers how to counteract demonic forces or influences, show how to resist and withstand the wiles of the devil with the commanding powerful and victorious words of Gd

Revelation 12:9, 11 The great dragon was hurled down — that ancient SERPENT called the DEVIL, or SATAN, who leads the whole world astray.... [11] They OVERCAME him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
•• The “serpent” of Eden was the devil, Satan!
• We are in an ongoing spiritual warfare against Satan. God wants us to overcome him.

• By the blood of the Lamb, the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Word of God.

• Another important weapon is in the next verse.
2 Corinthians 2:11 ...in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
•• We need to be aware of Satan’s schemes and tactics. Various translations describe the wicked wiles of the devil as his devices, his designs, his scheming, his wiles and intentions, his methods, his sly ways, his purposes, his evil work, and [I like this phrase] "what he's up to." All of these speak of our malevolent enemy the devil and his unrelenting efforts to bring us down.

•• Let's go back in time to the Garden of Eden and examine the Bible’s first account of the cunning tactics of our most dangerous spiritual enemy.
Genesis 1:31a God saw all that he had made, and it was VERY GOOD.
•• The devil is looking to turn “very good” things into very bad! Be aware of this scheme.
• Take heed to your marriage.

• Take heed to your walk with God.

• Elders, take heed to the health of the church.
•• Anywhere you think you are standing strong, take heed lest you fall.
Genesis 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; [17] but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”
•• The devil’s schemes? — Expect him to feature areas of “forbidden fruit.”
• Drugs, alcohol

• A romantic interest other than your spouse

• Immoral acts and movies, indecent magazines, etc.
Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more CRAFTY than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must NOT eat from ANY TREE in the garden’?”
•• Of great importance — Satan is very, very CRAFTY. Other versions say “subtle, cunning.”
• He will rarely attack you openly, straightforwardly.

• Because of his crafty nature, Satan’s tactics in temptation will tend to be tricky, sly, understated, subtle.
•• Expect Satan to cast doubt on God’s Word.
• Satan: “Did God really say...?”

• Satan to the then-young evangelist: “Billy Graham, do you really believe that Bible is truly the inspired, faultless Word of God?”

• Satan: “New Christian, do you really believe all that stuff those other Christians tell you from the Bible?”

• Satan: “Does God really mean that ‘wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise’?” (Proverbs 20:1)
•• Expect Satan to twist God’s Word.
• Satan: “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” — Go back and see: God did NOT say that! (2:16f) God actually had said they could eat from every tree except one.

• Satan: “Jesus, throw yourself off the temple into the angels’ hands.”

• Satan: “You’re doing a good enough job for the Lord, He’ll overlook that affair!”

• Satan: “Mister, the bible says, ‘Unto the pure all things are pure.’ So you just gazing at that lady won’t hurt.”

• Satan to an unhappy wife: “God wants you to be happy, so leave that miserable husband of yours!”

• Satan to a Christian "social drinker": “Jesus drank wine, so you should also.” But the Bible never actually says Jesus drank alcoholic wine.
Genesis 3:4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman.
•• Satan’s tactics? Deny and discredit God’s Word.
• Satan: “God said you’ll die; but you won’t.”

• Satan: “Woman, you’re just a slave to your house and family,” thus discrediting Proverbs 31 and Titus 2, which praise the virtuous woman for her domestic skills.

• Satan: “Teens, it’s important to ‘be cool’ and to ‘go with the flow’,” thus discrediting “Be not conformed to this world...” (Romans 12:2).

• Satan: “Cancer patient, sure, God heals, but this illness is too big,” thus denying “...[He] heals ALL...” (Psalm 103:3).
Genesis 3:5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
•• Satan’s tactics? — to appeal to man’s covetousness, his desire for more, for better...
• “...you will be like God...” — a failing of Mormonism

• “Judas, here are 30 pieces of silver.”

• “King David, you need that beautiful neighbor lady.”
Remember, against all Satan’s tactics and strategies, among your best spiritual weapons are:
• the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ

• the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ

• and the word of God — Jesus spoke victoriously to Satan in the temptation in the wilderness: “It is written ... it is written ... it is written.”

C.S. Lewis’s ‘The Screwtape Letters’ is about a senior devil training a junior devil. The senior devil informs his apprentice that there are two ways humans can fall into the trap of evil. Firstly, by not acknowledging evil exists. In that way when it does humans are not prepared and can’t cope. Secondly, by acknowledging that evil is a very powerful force to be afraid of and more powerful than good. In that way humans readily give in when evil afflicts them.

From are Gospel reading today, the first thing we can say is that there is no doubt evil does exist in the world. We know that already simply because of all the suffering that we see in the world. Recently a new baptism liturgy was produced by the Church of England which removed the word evil. Why? People were uncomfortable with the concept of evil and didn’t want to acknowledge it exists (that would be falling into the first ‘screwtape’ trap). But incidents like the one we have heard today suggest otherwise.

At the end of our Luke’s Gospel account, however, we find ‘the man who had been possessed by demons sitting quietly at Jesus’ feet, clothed and sane.’ The man had been completely transformed! And that should make us realise that, ultimately, good is more powerful than evil (we should not fall into the second ‘screwtape’ trap). Jesus held power over demons 2,000 years ago, and he still does today. It was interesting to hear my Deliverance Ministry colleague say that even saying the Lord’s Prayer can have a powerful influence over evil.
Perhaps our viewpoint on evil should fall somewhere between the two ‘screwtape’ traps, i.e. acknowledge that evil does exist, but that ultimately it has limited power, as Jesus has already conquered evil. Think of the battle between good and evil as being already won, but evil refuses to give up, and acts rather like a sniper, still trying to inflict damage when it can.
I leave the final word to the Bible - James (4: 7) tells us ‘Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.’ Stay close to God and with the Holy Spirit’s power we can prevent evil thoughts or actions taking hold of us!
